Your think Roman Catholics, I believe, which is not quite the same as Christians. Many Roman Catholics are Christian, many are not. To be "born again" is an important Christian principal that not all Roman Catholics observe.
I think the dark gothic looking decor is simply traditional. It's a reminder to us that Evil does exist and that supernatural evil is in fact influencing mankind.
Most Christians that are not Roman Catholic are far less regimental and put far less emphasis on the riches and traditions of the church, and focus more on the aspects of the Holy Spirit actively transforming us.
However, an aspect of the worship service for all Christians is the ongoing funeral of the Son of God. It is not the only aspect. There is also the joy and praise for the resurrection, and the hope we have. There is also the grateful supplication, and the prayerful petition.

Back in the middle ages most people couldn't read. Therefore they couldn't read the bible. That is why Churchs are full of paintings and statues- it was the only way they could get the message accross to the common people. The statues seem gothic and dark because one of the main messages was hell and not to sin ect- however it should be noted that it wasn't "gothic" and "dark" to them back then.

Maybe not necessarily gothic, but i understand what you are saying. When i was little i was afraid to go in to the big cathedrials and older churches because they scared me by all the statues and stuff that they had. Most of the stuff like that are from the past. Most churches now are up beat and fun to be in. Not that i am christian anymore, but i have seen churches and been in them.

There is a great difference between what passses for Christianity today and the true Christian belief that Jesus set up 2000 years ago. Also the bible prophesied this:
(2 Thessalonians 2:3) "Let no one seduce YOU in any manner, because it will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness gets revealed, the son of destruction."
What you see in Christendom ("dark and gothic") is part of that great apostasy.

I'm so sorry it seems that way to you. Our church has moved one service over to using praise songs, which are very happy and lively. A lot of the traditional hymns were written in the 1700s and 1800s, so seem dark. Worship should be a joyful, thankful celebration, without losing sight of the fact that we have sinned, but are forgiven. What a reason to rejoice! Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!

I think it depends on the particular group
Some orthodox Christians have a style of quiet serenity that they feel worshipful
Some Christians prefer a style with more light and windows
Some Christians avoid the pcitures and statues, like Brethren do not even used crosses and prefer simplicity
some of it is style, I personally lean more on the light and simple side

Thankyou for your answer to my question... I am a little confused though? I was taught ( being a converted Muslim myself), that NO slaying of an innocent is Ok in the eyes of Allah.
That the slaying of 1 is equal to thousands... Jihad is wrong and contrary to the noble laws of Islam!
Peace be with you...

I'm a Christian, and play in a band, water-ski - jump out of 'planes - have a wild time in the local, travel the planet, go to Glastobury. It goes on.
What on Earth is "dark" about that ?
You must know some weird Christian folks.

Most Christians I know are pretty happy and cheery. Protestant Christians tend to be a bit more upbeat than what you're describing. Buildings tend to be bright. Music is definately not dark, it's very joyful and upbeat. I have a feeling you might be describing Catholicism.
