My sweet little papillon was attacked by some huge mutt when I tried to take him for a walk last night. It took a big hunk off his side. I took him to the vet last night, they bandaged him up, gave him a shot for pain. I didn't have the money for everything they wanted to do for him (which the estimate was a little over $1600!).. He's in pain, but he's not bleeding profusely. This morning, he only yepls when he tries to move. I think he's going to be okay. I called the police to see if I could press charges against the people whose dog attacked mine, or something, you know. They reffered me to the animal control. Ok, so. My question is, what will happen if I call animal control? Will they press some kind of charges, or what. I don't want to call them on these people if all they are going to do is confiscate the dog and euthanize it. This other dog was on a leash, as was my dog. Yet, the other dog attacked mine unprovoked. This other dog must of weighed 100 pounds. Mine might weigh 2.

I am in the US. This other dog just happened to be right outside my door. My dog walked out the door ahead of me on the leash, and this other dog attacked him.. I didn't even get to step outside.

Thanks guys. I will call animal control and see what they say they can /will do before I give them any information. I know these people aren't going to pay crap without having to be sued, just because of the neighborhood I live in. I would go and talk to them about it, but I know they just aren't going to give a damn, because they took off after their dog bit mine. I DO know where they live though.

I just hesitataed to call animal control because I was afraid they'd come and get the other dog, then I'd get a brick through my window or something worse you know. But we'll see what they say. Thank you.

He was not chained outside my door. I put his leash on him, opened the door, and these other people just happened to be walking right by my door taking this big dog for a walk. I live in an apartment building.

I called animal control a little while ago. They say there is nothing thy can do, because both dogs were on a leash, neither one of us was in violation. They say it'd be a civil case. So. Guess I'll see what I can do with that.

Once my dog got attacked by a pit bull and animal control wouldn't do anything because it was dog on dog aggression. Not sure if rules would be different where you live.

There are no criminal charges against an animal or the owners of an animal in a dog attack against another dog. It is good that you contacted the police tho so you have a record of it. Keep the vet bills and everything. Take this case to small claims court. You do not use a lawyer, so not attorney's fees, just some court cost. You should be able to get back everything it cost you. Call animal control. This dog is dangerous. Next time it may kill a child.

Usually these places have a kind of 3 strikes policy... If this attacker dog has bitten another animal or person or does in the future than it most likely will be euthanized. You should report it to them anyway, if this dog has bitten a person before it attacked your dog than the owners have been warned and should be doing something to prevent this behavior, such as training or a muzzle. If you don't report it you could be allowing it to go on and possibly bite another animal, person or even a child. Especially if it was unprovoked.

CALL ANIMAL CONTROL!! Don't hesitate, get all this taken care of the right way and get your dog BACK to the vet for the treatment he needs!! Suing the owner IS a good thing and then, your sweet little papillon will be good as new AND it will end up being paid for by the aggressors owner. That's insane.

ask the animal controll officer what they would do - it is likely different from area to area.. and we dont even know what country you are in - Africa? Australia? Argentina?
At the very least I would ask the people to pay half or full vet costs...........
it probably wasnt an unproked attack - its just that the dogs are thinking along different lines than you are and what may seem innocent to you was provocation to the other dog.. in fact if you were walking in an opposite direction that could be taken as a threat... or if you were "sneaking" up from behind...
anyhow I would ask for help with vet costs but that would be all

First off, call the local dog control is a wonderful idea. Secondly, I would write a letter to the dog owner (save a copy for your records) and enclose a copy of the vet expenses, demanding repayment. If the dog owner does not comply within 30 days, I would write another letter saying you are referring it to an attorney and you will be asking for attorney's fees and court costs if you are forced to take it to court. Don't back down! The owner of the dog needs to know that this behavior is not acceptable. I hope your dog is up to date on his/her shots. Please watch the wound carefully for infection. Also, see if your vet will give you something for his/her pain. Good luck and take care

I don't really understand how these dogs came into contact if they were both on lead. Is he chained right outside your door? Was yours on a flexilead or something so he was able to get to close? Is the large dog chained on a very long lead?
AC will possibly euthanize the dog. In some places that is done for animal aggression. In some places even if your dog were to kill a rabbit.

sorry to hear that
the other owners should pay your bills but if they wont pay you can sue the other owners for the cost of your dogs et bills. talk to a solicoter.
realy if you cant afford the vet bill you should give the dog to someone who can or raise/borrow the money as the dog may have internal bleeding or damage.
my arnty's dog was attacked by 2 lose dogs and the vet checked her over but missed the ingeries under her long belly fur, said she seemed ok but she died 2 days later of itrnal bleeding.

Even if the answer to your question is yes, they will put down the dog, you need to go ahead with it. I personally don't think they would but IF they did, it is something that needs to happen to ensure the safety of other small dogs and children.
There were some good answers about small claims too above mine, that sounds like a good option to follow too.

Talk to the owner first. They may be willing to pay for your bills with out having to file a police report or getting into anything legal. If not, then warn them you are about to call animal control.
