I don't mean to offend anyone, I've heard this a few times, it seemed a little out there for me, so I figured I'd investigate it.

I am a member of the LDS church. This is a true belief of our church. We believe that we have divine heritage and the potential for eternal glory, including inheriting "all that the Father has", as Jesus promised. We take this promise literally, and through modern day revelations it has been taught that the ultimate glory mankind can attain is not simply playing a harp on a cloud and worshiping God, but actually becoming like God is. That is, becoming a God and having spirit children and creations of our own. It sounds a bit radical, but so did Jesus' teachings to the Jews. That's why he got crucified, because people couldn't accept new doctrine and they couldn't break out of their ancient traditions to embrace new and additional things. It is pretty awesome to contemplate it, but if you think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense. I mean, we, like all christians, believe that we are spirit children of our heavenly father. And we, like all christians, believe the things that Jesus taught. And Jesus taught that we can inherit mansions prepared by our Heavenly Father. In fact, he taught that we can inherit all that the father has, just as we expect our own earthly children to become like us and inherit all that we have. This earth life and the family structure is a type of that eternal family, that eternal bond that we have with our heavenly father.

This revelation was first given publicly at Nauvoo, Illinois, July 12, 1843. In May of that year Joseph revealed that "In the celestial glory there are three heavens or degrees; and in order to obtain the highest, a man must enter into this order of the priesthood [meaning the new and everlasting covenant of marriage]; and if he does not, he cannot obtain it."{34} Joseph goes on to reveal that "if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned."{35}

It has already been pointed out that the individual will receive a measure of salvation regardless of his disposition. The recurring question that remains is, Why should I subject myself to the regimen of the church (ie. the hassles) if I will receive salvation anyway? We find the answer further in the revelation. "We must be obedient to every covenant that we make in the temple of the Lord. He (God) has said that if we are true and faithful we shall pass by the angels to our exaltation. We will become gods."{36} The Mormon hopes to become a god himself but only if he is in complete compliance with the church.

It is noteworthy that the teaching that reveals the foundation for celestial marriage {exaltation} is not to be found in the Book of Mormon, the "most correct" of any book on earth.{37} Therefore, it seems that the motivation for entering into celestial marriage is not based on fact but on the possibility of being a god or a goddess.

I found those facts about Celestial marriage. When I was a Mormon, they didn't tell me a lot of things because I was not married in the temple. Things like these boggle my mind that people believe them. But they believe in Scientology...with the Zenu alien god...so people will believe ANYTHING, which is what L. Ron Hubbard said. There also was a saying by P. T. Barnum, "a sucker is born every minute."

I wouldn't say a ruler, like a king or queen or something. But we do believe that we have divine potential, in that in the scheme of eternity (which, I can't stress enough the broad perspective of eternity, and how long this would probably take), that we can become just like our Heavenly Father. As I said, this is after a forever long period of time of learning and becoming better, because even the best human is no where close to that now.

Oh, side note to AuroraDawn - my personal motivation for being married in the temple really has nothing to do with that, I was married in the temple because I love my husband, and I can't stand the thought of our marriage ending at death.

best wishes.

That is a bit simple but yes that is their ultimate goal, to become a god like the god before them. To get to that level of the Mormon heaven is a bit impossible. Oh yes I know a lot of the faithful will tell me that it's not only possible but probable. You have to live the law of the Mormon Church fully (I have never seen anyone do that...) Jim

The LDS people take this verse literally:
John 14:26
26 But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

If you know all things, you can do all things. What Father does not want His children to have what He has?
