before formating, try booting in safe mode and then try to boot with the Windows XP cd in the drive and look for the "repair" option. If this not work then take your harddrive to a friend of you that understand computers and ask him to install your harddrive in his computer with the drive in SLAVE MODE. Then he will be able to copy your important data on his computer (except if your drive is really dead). If it's only a malfunction of windows then you have plenty of options to restore them.
When your car has some smoke you might want to repair it instead of buying another each time. Formating is the last hope to keep your hardware but you'll loose all your data.
Any computer shop could probably restore your data (at a certain price)

Well, that's the blue screen of death.
You should've specified what it say exactly to pinpoint the problem.
About your files, relax, they're still there, you windows XP has an error which can be anything, (you need to see what the screen says).
Take the computer to a service shop, they'll now what to do, and make sure you specifiy what files you need saved.

I have found that the best way to deal with this is to purchase the program "Fix-it Utilities" Start your computer open your CD drive and place the disk in then turn the computer off and restart it. the program will find a spot before the problem and restart it. Then install the program and it will keep your computer safe

When you boot the computer and you see the Windows splash screen hit F8, this will give you a menu of choices. Select "last known configuration" and hit enter. If that does not work, insert your Windows CD and boot from it then chose to repair your windows install.

Oh man, the BSOD. Blue Screen of Death. Not much hope there unless you can boot into safe mode. If not, reformating is your only hope.
NEVER, EVER store information ONLY on the computer, ALWAYS use an external drive (CDR, Flash Drive, etc.)
