No...they were originally called "hot dachshunds" but a reporter couldn't spell dachshund...that's why they're now commonly called "hot dogs"...here's the story:

In the press box, sports cartoonist, T.A. "Tad" Dorgan (1877-1929), a newspaper cartoonist for the New York Evening Journal, was nearing his deadline and desperate for an idea. Hearing the vendors, he hastily drew a cartoon of a frankfurter with a tail, legs, and a head, so that it looked like a dachshund. Not sure how to spell the word "dachshund" he simply wrote "hot dog!" The cartoon was a sensation and the term hot dog was born.

No, there is no dog in Hot Dogs. However the following infomation gives you the idea of why Hot Dogs got there name:

Hot dogs were frequently known as frankfurters or franks, but the name "hot dog" became popular by the 1890s.
In the 1830s, it was widely rumored that the dogs that roamed urban streets were regularly rounded up (by "dog wagons") and made into sausages; by the 1840s, the term "dog sandwich" was used.
The 1860s popular song "Der Deitcher's Dog" (written by Septimus Winner and known by the lyrics "Where oh where has my little dog gone?") contained:

Und sausage is goot: Baloney, of course,
Oh! where, oh! where can he be?
Dey makes ‘em mit dog, und dey makes ‘em mit horse:
I guess dey makes ‘em mit he.

Yes there is dog in hot dogs, but only in those of lesser quality. Some hot dog makers use any kind of meat they can get cheaply.Perhaps you can tell me if there is any ham in hamburgers?
