I would like you just to review our web page (www.ifpa-fitness.com) and click on the top (IFPA Certifications), this will tell you the curriculum that every Personal Trainer is certified in.

As a Master Personal Trainer meaning I certify IFPA Personal Trainers, your Personal Trainer must be knowledgeable on the Core Program for safe and effective training. Both of you should discuss your routine, what are your goals in fitness, bodybuilding, etc., or your goal to improve in a certain sport.
He or She must understand your available time, and be able to workout a schedule with a printed work-out plan or matrix which you and your trainer monitor your training. They are for you, to ensure you meet your goals. They must know all equipment, and the correct way by demostrating it to you, and then having you do it while they watch. He or She should be able to discuss nutrition, and a fitness lifestyle.

You can ask questions about how long they have been certified, etc., but you might find one eager to help you, that you may be his or hers first customer. In this, you should look at their posture, their appearance, and their enthusiasm to help you.

And, just to let you know it is a very open field, and has allot of specialized courses that you may like.......and perhaps you may also be interested in being a Certified Personal Trainer.
