Surely they are all as good as each other when it comes to starting a fire ? And in any case smoking is not permitted on aircraft these days so why not just prohibit any kind of match or lighter ?

its so fires are not started by accident. Ligters can pop and strike anywhere matches can, well, strike anywhere even (and I know its unlikely) by accident

This is more for the smokers who can then light up when they are in the terminal. Safer to carry matches than lighters that can explode in flight.

i guesss i think i know why...if the plane crashes somewhere with no inhabitants and some passengers survives...they might need matches to burn the wreckage...creating big flames for the rescuers to see...maybe they've anticipated things like this could happen????

I think you may find that all that you have mentioned will be banned.
And there is a hefty penalty for trying to take them on board.
