Yes and no. There is hard evidence to show that he actually existed as a physical person. There is some evidence to argue that he was an influential person even a leader. There is very little evidence to show that he was the son of God. This is open to interpretation and the fundamental to a key human condition...faith.
My own question might be...if Jesus was the son of God why didn't God produce more children?

Was there such a person as Yeshua ben Yousef? It's highly unlikely that such a story base would have built itself up within a few generations after his death without some basis. We can also infer that this person was a Hebrew mystic with a small following in and around Jerusalem. There's also some corroborating archaeological evidence, including a tombstone that indicates a possible brother, although direct historical documentation is lacking.

Of course, the whole thing is rather irrelevant to the larger question, "Was this person divine?"

There is more unbiased historical evidence to suggest that a person called Jesus (of Nazarus) existed than there is any of the following:

1) Pontius Pilot
2) Ming (as in Ming Dynasty)
3) Genghis Khan
4) Socrates

Many other religions (Judaism, Islam etc) all accept that Jesus existed - they aren't so hot on the whole "deity" thing :o)

Yes, a man named Jesus existed. This is pretty well documented by contemporary sources. Whether he was the son of God, the Messiah, or anything beyond just being a dude who lived once is a matter for some debate. I think he was just a guy with some good ideas.

I believe he, as an Essene rabbi, existed, but after his death he was exploited by Paul into a Pauline view of messianic Judaism.

In the very earliest gospel writings, there is no reference to Jesus' death having any redeeming function; in fact, there is no mention of the crucifixion at all. John E. Remsburg's The Christ: A Critical Review and Analysis of the Evidence of His Existence, lists the following writers who lived during the time, or within a century after the time, that Jesus is supposed to have lived: Josephus, Philo-Judas, Seneca, Pliny Elder, Arrian, Petronius, Dion Pruseus, Paterculus, Suetonius, Juvenal, Martial, Persius, Plutarch, Pliny Younger,Tacitus, Justus of Tiberius, Apollonius, Quintilian, Lucanus, Epictetus, Hermogones Silius Italicus, Statius, Ptolemy, Appian, Phlegon, Valerius Maximus, Lucian Pausanias, Florus Lucius, Quintius Curtius, Aulus Gellius, Dio Chrysostom, Columella, Valerius Flaccus, Damis, Favorinus, Lysias, Pomponius Mela, Appion of Alexandria, Theon of Smyrna, etc.

Enough of the writings of the authors named in the foregoing list remains to form a library. Yet in this mass of Jewish and Pagan literature, according to Remsburg, "aside from two forged passages in the works of a Jewish author, and two disputed passages in the works of Roman writers, there is to be found no mention of Jesus Christ." Nor, do any of these authors make note of the Disciples or Apostles -- increasing the embarrassment from the silence of history concerning the foundation of Christianity.

Im no christian, but i believe he could have existed but not in the way that christians think. I just think he was a man like any other, nothing particularly special who had faith in a religion that he liked to preach about. A man with a wife and kid, not someone who could walk on water etc.
