I grew up in Micronesia, which was a series of atolls controlled by the Japanese. When the war began, there were many small boats from Singapore, the Philippines and elsewhere that sailed out to sea to escape the invasion. These refugees ended up all over, some to Australia and safety, but many were captured on the high seas by the Japanese Navy. I understand many people fled to Indonesia and rode out the war there.

When the US began invading the various Japanese held islands, they bypassed many of them, leaving the Japanese soldiers on their own, without supplies from the outside.

Some of these soldiers did not surrender for many years after the war ended. I think the last holdout gave up in 1978!
