Give them time and they should take to each other, I have had cats my whole life and that's all I did is just let them duke it out every now and then and eventually they learn to deal with each other

I wish I knew the answer to that one! I have the same dilemma, it has been over a year and the old kitty STILL doesn't like the new kitty. The family loves the new kitty, especially the kids. I use a squirt bottle to break them up. I have thought about locking them both into a travel kennel together until they decide to get along, but I keep thinking that might be cruel. Good Luck!
I tried the gradual initial introduction per suggestion of my vet, it didn't work...I still get the cat fights.

Well cats are territorial and depending on the race are more or less territorial, the older cat will try claim on a daily basis his teritory and superiority. You would have to spend some time monitoring and scaulding for a while it won't make it stop but it will deminish the intensity of the sudden attacks.
I have used that when I am in the vicinity I get ahead of the situation and grab the older cat hug him and start talking to him to defuse the situation. After a while he gets the idea that its not ok to attack the other cat.

Well, no. There a couple of things that could have been done, but it's too late now. Like you should not bring the new cat into the home, have a friend or neighbor bring the kitten or cat in.
Now you'll just have to let nature take it's course. It's a common problem that cats will not allow another feline into their space.
Good luck.

you have to keep them separated for about 10 days. take the kitty out a few times a day showing the other cat that it's ok. they will eventually learn to live together. they may never love each other, but they will learn to live together.

Time, I was in the same situation a few months ago. My older cat wasn't very nice to the new one. I think he was just establishing his dominance. After a few weeks of that they get along just fine now.

It will just take time. Make sure you are giving both an equal amount of attention.
