I work as a vet tech and one day we looked through our computer program which holds all of our patient and client information. The two most popular names are

Molly (with Zoe in close second) for a girl
Max is by far the winner for the boys

The most popular dog name in North America is Sam, Sammie or
Samantha (which means "listener"). The second most popular is
Max, Maxie, Maxwell or Maxine (which means "the greatest" in
Latin). Third is Lady, followed by Bear, Maggie, Buddy, Tasha,
Chelsea (or Chelsie), Holly and Shasta. Other very popular names
are Brandy, Ginger and Taffy.

It may be surprising, but more than half (50%) of all Pet Names
are either human names or nicknames. People largely name their
animals as they would name themselves.

Another fifth (20%) of names are based on the Pets appearance or
personality. A black cat becomes Blacky or Midnight, and active
dog Comet or Dash.

Max is the most popular name right now. People think names like Spot and Rover are popular, but do you know of any dogs really with those names?

Max - the last time I saw an article it the paper, anyway.

When I worked at the vets, I used to say there are about 100 names people use & you see them all over & over. It was cool when someone came up with something you hadn't heard to death! That's why I encourage people to pick names based on a hobby or favorite book they read long ago. Be unique! We had a guy who loved golf that named his Schnauzer ' Putter' - that was different & inventive, for example. And no, we never had ONE Fido!

Tink... got it right... in the UK it was Rover in my younger days, course these days it could be a film star's name or a fantasy character from the movies ;-)

I called a dog Taggart and I've never heard that used by anyone else before! My daughter had a Morse.
