His father (full maltese) was easy peasy and was trained by 8 weeks. This little guy is 4 months old and he is still having issues (although, I CAN see progress, he just doesn't 'ask' to go outside). This morning he peed on my bed! Is it possible that he has a bladder infection or something physically wrong with him? If so, what symptoms should I look for?

Sometimes, you have to be trained before the dog. I went through the very same thing with my dog when I got him as a 3 month old puppy.
To start with, I began taking up his water dish 2 hours before bedtime. After his last outing of the night, he was good for 7-8 hours.
Next, I taught him how to pee on command. It's really easy. Every few hours, I would take him out to the spot I wanted him to go in, and tell him over and over "go pee, go pee". When he did go, I would praise him enthusiastically. The positive reinforcement really worked! He still doesn't really tell me when he needs to go pee, but I now know the signs - pacing, sniffing, etc... My puppy is now 7 months old, and hasn't had an accident for at least 3 months. I now take him outside only 2 or 3 times a day. I tell him "Go pee" or "Go Poop", and he does.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/eh4rl

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Smaller dogs can be problematic in potty training.

Straining, acting painful, frequent urination, un-usual color of urine (bloody, deep color, concentrated), excessive drinking, incontinence...many symptoms to look for if there could be a problem. The best solution if you suspect an infection? Collect a clean sample and bring it to the vet immediately and they can run a urinalysis. Shouldn't need an appoinment for a drop off. First morning is best (imagine that!) and if you can't get it to the vet right away (too early in a.m. or open later, etc.), refrigerate it and bring it in ASAP.

Good luck. Potty training can even take up to a year. :(

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMPz7

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Bichon Frise are known to be harder to housetrain. Use a puppy playpen and den (also known as crate training) and remember to take him outside frequently. The more often he gets rewarded for using the toilet spot the better. Don;t just open the door, take him there on the lead. He's still only 16 weeks, don't measure him by your last dog!

Hi,

Just take him out every 2 hours and tell him to go potty and praise him for doing so.

If you crate him or not, at night don't give him any water 2 hours before bed and be sure to take him out to do his business just prior to bed.

Good luck but keep on track with that and he will learn.

Here is a link that might help.
