I actually asked about this a couple weeks ago. My eskimo spitz was doing that, right where the tail and the back meet and a little ways up his back he had chewed it practically raw but wouldn't stop. A lot of people on here gave me a hard time because I hadn't taken him to the vet immediately. One woman suggested I add a capful of vegetable oil to his food everytime I feed him because he may have dry skin. It worked wonderfully! I took him to the vet and the vet said it was fine, wouldn't hurt him at all. 1 month later and he is completely healed and doesn't scratch at all. If the lady who suggested this reads this, thank you!

Allergies, definitly, and don't take him this week, take him today. My dog had that and we waited to take him and all his fur fell out around the area and he had a huge bald spot. It was all raw and sore, it was pretty bad. But the vet can give you something that will relieve your dogs stress... would you wait till later on in the week if you had a spot that itched so bad you scratched it raw? Don't be mean, take him right away. Get the poor doggy some drugs.

If not fleas, then could very well be his anal sacs are full and needs to see a vet so they don't get impacted. It's very uncomfortable for them and can be painful (stinky, too). Another possible cause could be worms (tapes look like little pieces of rice and can sometimes be found stuck to the animals fur at their behind). This sac that looks like a rice grain is full of eggs of tapeworms. Very nasty. Check with the vet. Allergies, anal sacs, fleas, worms...any would be dx by a vet in one simple visit.

Sounds like a flea allergy. My dog used to bite and chew herself raw until I started treating her with Frontline every spring. Rub a little Benadryl cream on that area and treat him with Frontline. Good luck!

Allergies are generally the problem. Sometimes they're allergic to flea or mosquito bites. I had a dog with a similar problem, the cause? We let him swim in the Connecticut river, apparently it wasn't as clean as they claimed as several dogs in the neighborhood that took a daily swim had the same problem.

Fleas don't live on your dog, they jump on to feed then jump off again! So get him Frontline even if you don;t think he needs it.
It could also be a food intolerance. Try feeding a brand called Butchers Tripe or Butchers Chicken and Tripe, it has no additives or colourings. And feed it with plain wholemeal dog biscuit, and some leafy green veg (I use frozen spinach nuggets) and carrots. (Again, frozen diced is fine).
If you can't get tripe use sardines in oil, drain off the oil and feed 1 x 60g tin per 20kg bodyweight per day.

It could be fleas, but most probably are hot spots. There are medications for that condition. Use them, otherwise it will get worse.
