Apparently this individual had eaten the snow as a means of supplying his body with water and it prevented him of dying of dehydration.

when you look at the deeper surface (deeper meaning), i think that it tells us about something where one thing can be transformed into another essential thing we need the most. In life, there are certain things that just seem nonsense to us but then, if you take a careful look, you may realize that this nonsense thing is that something you were looking for,,...you were not able to see what it means to you.. let's take this literally, the snow around him seems like it is of no importance at all, but what he realized afterwards is that that snow can be turned into water which saved him from dying of thirst... literally speaking,, he ate the snow, which melted to water which quenched his thirst.. got it?

It means he ate all the snow around him for water so he would'nt die of thirst. So he was probably there for a very long time. Which is weird, cause if there was snow and he was there for a very long time it seems he would freeze to death. Oh well. Good luck!

He ate the snow cause he was thirsty (snow melts into water) hence the reason why he did not die from thirst.

Unless there is some hidden meaning here that isn't apparent, he ate the snow so he didn't die of thirst. Am I missing something here?

Very simply that the person, in order to sustain his life, ate the snow around him in order to keep from dying from lack of water

I've never heard of it, but I have to believe it would mean that someone recognized the potential of the substance around him and realized that eating snow could provide his body with the water it needed (except for the fact that actually eating snow would lower your core temperature and kill you from hypothermia, but that's beside the point).

It mean that an animal came and ate away the snow from around the man, after that, the animal realizing it's thirst was quenched, discovered he was still hungry and therefore ate the man. thus, saving the man from dying of thirst.
