Well, let's think about this for a minute.

A mother has just taken care of her child for 18 long years. Happy years and also some very stressful one's I'm sure. She has done her best to prepare her child for the outside world. Tried her best to instill the values necessary to make it out there in this harsh place.

And although she's happy that her child is officially an adult, she's also saddened that she will no longer be able to protect her child. She worries that the child will make the right choices. The choices the child makes will be the responsibility of the child, for now the child is an adult. And any decision that her offspring make as an adult, will now reflect back upon her.

A part of it too, is that final seperation. For 18 years she's been able to keep her child safe and guarded against the evil happenings in this place. She will no longer be able to keep tabs on her child's whereabouts. And that's kind of scarey, especially in this day and age. You know?

She's proud, happy, sad....It's a very confusing time. All these emotions wrapped up into one giant ball.

Not all mothers get emotional when their child turn 18, but I guess if they do, it's because that age often means that you are now an adult or getting there at least, you are not the baby/kid that your mother cared for so long anymore, you're gonna fly with your own wings.

Because their baby is now full grown , able to vote , live independently. It is a big day. They feel their job is done. It is a bit like retirement. Also some of the emotion is pride, when they look at their child now adult and feel the job was well done. I felt all of this but as I found out that they don't really leave you or become independent, they still need you, but they pretend they don't !!!

My mom only got emotional when I turned 18 because I got pregnant on my birthday and married a month latter to a 36 year old. Now tell me that that wouldn't do something to ANY mother.
And then moved out, then to another state, then bought a house, then got into college. She hates my new life, and my husband.

A few reasons; if you get into trouble with the law they don't have to legally pay your fines once they are18, you can turn them out into the world and they don't have to legally come back and lastly they can legally buy you a drink so you can forget how horrible they've been for the past 18 years.

Because she spent the last 18 years of her life raising you – loving you no matter what, feeding, dressing, teaching, taking care of you when you were sick or hurt, protecting you from danger, worrying about you. When you reach 18 yrs, it’s major milestone. Her baby has grown up. You no longer need her, but you will always be her child.

it's called the Empty Nest Syndrome. I must be one of those MOM's that didn't have the Syndrome. I was there with a bag packed and kicked the little birdies out of the NEST.

Only 1 birdie left. She's 14....her days are #####

Mothers get emotional all the time. Your kids are growing up and while your proud of them and want them to be independent adults you still love them and want them to need you.

We are no longer able to protect them from the world. We have to trust that we have redied them to survive on their own. It is also an end to a big part of our lives. 18 years is a long time to have somebody and then let them go.
