One day you will be dead. Oh well. And once dead, that's it. Gone forever. Why do you need god? Does religion really answer so many needs? Is it so hard to face the fact of earthly suffering and human mortality?

I feel it is the safe & comfortable answer for a lot of people who choose to belong to an organized religion. But for others, there is a spirituality involved. A measure of faith, rather than blind faith.

And yes, it is hard to face the fact that we will die. Some of us ponder it on a philosophical level, others believe in reincarnation, others believe in a heaven/hell scenario, etc. I don't feel any of these ways are better than another, in general. We should each choose the one that works for us.

Once you're dead, that's not it! When you die your good and bad deeds go with you and you wait till Judgement Day comes.

When thast day comes everyone will be risen from the dead and accounted by God for all they have done. Then you either go to hell or heaven (or hell, get punished and then to heaven) and stay there for eternity, according to your deeds.

The life in this world is just like a test! It's the afterlife that's more important and we just prepare for it here on earth, by following God's Revelations, because God created us. Without religion - surely we humans would be lost!

Religion is not the same as spirituality. Many highly spiritual people have been very brave - like Ghandi. Religion provides people with a vast array of answers to common questions which is comforting to most. I see no reason or advantage in calling religious people cowards, what is to be gained? Most of the time, those that pervert religion for their own uses are not actually following their own religion to begin with. In fact there are very few truly destructive religions, simply many wayward and confused people.

I'm an agnost, so I kinda agree.
Religions where started in uncertain times without science or medical technology.
I guess even today it's easier to believe that "death is not the end, but the beginning of something new"
We just have to respect the religious folks, they think we're cowards for not "choosing God". Why I dont know, but hey, it takes all sorts to make the world go round.

Just because you don't have a religion doesn't mean those who do are wrong. You believe what you want, and those with whatever religion believe what they want. Passing judgement on people with religion, just because they believe in an afterlife, does not make you a better person. Some people like having beliefs and comfort systems, or faith. This doesn't make them scared or weak, just as it doesn't make you a mighty warrior in courage for not having a religion. No one on this earth can say whose beliefs are right or wrong, not even I. I am a Christian but I respect others for what they believe whether it is in conccurrence with my beliefs or not. I expect them to show me the same respect.

"Is religion the refuge of cowards?"

Hardly, have you ever read Fox's Book of Martyrs?

Here's what the Apostle Paul faced for his efforts to spread the Christian faith before he finally had his head chopped off in Rome.

2 Corinthians 11:23 Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one--I am talking like a madman--with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. 24 Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.

No, the Christian religion isn't for cowards, it's for people who have had their eyes opened to the truth that life isn't some cosmic accident but that there is a God in Heaven who will one day have each of us give an account of how we have lived the life He has given us on the planet He has provided for us.

No there is no cowardliness in standing up and saying I believe in God and I know that all will live on, it just depends on where - heaven or hell. We will all be held accountable for our sins and what we have done on this earth, but one day there will be a new heaven and a new earth. I look forward to that day. Yes, on the contrary it is not the coward who believes. It takes courage to stand and say I believe and quote the bible and follow what it says.

Religion was created by human beings so that they can have something to believe in, so that they can feel superior, important that someone out there in the sky is looking out for them, that they are here on earth for a reason. What makes me angry the most is the fact that when ever something bad happens to someone, the excuse will always be SATAN was behind it, the point I'm making is that humans always blame someone when something bad happens, humans never take responsibility, it's always him, her, it, they, them, etc.

We will eventually find out who is right, so why worry?
And, others could say the Athists beliefs are the refuge of cowards too...as I said, any belief system...

Cowards afraid to face the seamier side of life? You maybe thinking of ...oh say....people like Mother Theresa and her nuns? Maybeso you mean those missionaries in South America whose wives stayed with and aided the very tribe that killed their husbands? Or perhaps you were contemplating those Chinese and Japanese Christians who went cheerfully to their deaths rather than forswear Jesus as Lord?

Puhleeze! It takes a lot more guts to be a Christian than it does to be an atheist. All they have to is bury their heads in the sand and pretend no One can see them because they can't see HIM!
