In the short time I have been associated to this site , I have asked some interesting questions , some lame questions , some personal quesions , and some provocative questions .
A lot lt of sociology questions .
To my surprise , some of what I thought were better questions , received a fairly low response . As an experiment today I threw religion into the forum , and received a huge mixed response .
The people devoted to both sides of the fence , both devoted to Christianity , In a love hate relationship , swarmed to the bait .
Why is it in many cases , if you ask some one to think for themselves , they turn to a better question where they can boast their ignorance

Religion will always get responses because when people actually stop and think about what they are blindly accepting as the truth they get embarrassed and defensive causing them to lash out.

It's because we all have a personal belief system, and if someone like you asks a provocative question threatens that belief system, most of us will quickly and blindly rush in to defend our position. Everybody thinks they are right and that they have the truth, don't they?

You can read about this in the book of Job in the Old Testament.

As far as Christianity goes, it's not a religion. It's a relationship with God and defies all logic and human explanation. Show me another "religion" where the all-powerful God gives up all his power for some time, takes on the form of one of his created creatures and lives with them for over 30 years. And then he eventually allows other created beings to kill him in the most painful and horrific way? Doesn't make much sense, does it? Perhaps it's so far-fetched, this story, that it might even be true...?

Strangely christianity is about thinking for ones-self, the response to strangers who ask what may seem strange questoins is incredibly personal, maybe its more obvious if you are a christian..... life questions, unless your a christian people are more inclined to live and let live in our anything goes society. It feels like an anything goes just as long its not christianity at times but i'm sure we'll manage.

Ten or fifteen years ago i'm sure you would of found alot more willing to debate your sociological and contoversial questions.

I responded to your 'Here's something interesting' and that's because it might have been. Interesting, I mean. I like interesting subjects. Why are you surprised that people respond to religious questions? I don't know what Athiests think the meaning of life is-that's their business. The majority of people think that Religion gives meaning to their lives. Of course they would respond to a religious question. What wonderful psychological truth do you think you've discovered here?
Whether a question is 'better' is a personal thing, isn't it? Why use the description 'bait'? What were you trying to catch?

Because most people have never learned or are afraid to think for themselves. I have the same problem with my questions. Someone advised me to 'dumb down' my questions and I get a better response now. Go figure.

My favorite question I asked--
I received one answer that understood the question but isn't that enough?

Perhaps you are interpreting it wrongly. "Why is it in many cases, if you ask some one to think for themselves , they turn to a better question where they can boast their ignorance?" The answer is just simple, they don't want to answer your questions because they don't know anything about it, don't want to talk about it or they think it's a lame question. You can't force them to do what you want if they don't want to.

there are three ways one can gain control over others as you will recall from sociology classes. the military, the religious belief system and the political system.

my sociology prof had a large sign painted above his desk which said " THINK .... IT MAY BE A NEW EXPIERENCE. "

if one doesn't think for themselves they need someone else to come up with various thoughts and ideas for them to accept and believe in

because were conditined not to think our entire lives, and what we fear we turn away from. find comfort in what we know(have swallowed)... and asking someone about religion is asking them or worsse questioning them on their way of life !!! anyone who answers for them Self is then responsible for their answer, if you follow ???

i think this means that they don,t want to think for themselves. people can be afraid of admitting they don,t know something.

but how can we evolve and learn if we do not admit when we don,t know.

to steal a phrase. don,t worry about running out of answers, only worry about running out of questions.
