I have a 4 year old, 2 year old and 5 month old. We take long trips about 2-3 times a year to see Grandma and Grandpa or just for family fun. Some things that I would recommend include:
* Making frequent stops to allow them to run around for 10-15 minutes
* Making sure that they are fed good meals. Don't let them just eat candy the whole time
* Learning some little kid songs before you leave. If they start crying/screaming, music really seems to help them cheer up, especially if they know the songs and can sing along.
* Rotate seats in the car. They think it's cool if mom and dad sit with them in back sometimes.
* DVD movies are nice, however, bring one that you know they already like. Don't purchase a new one thinking it'll be a hit.
Of course every child is different, so there is no textbook answer; so you'll just have to try and find what's best for your children.

I did about the same thing and discovered that the kids fell asleep in the car almost as soon as it got dark, so I continued driving much later into the night than I expected.
Remember that life is a journey, not a destination, so try to enjoy yourself.

Go to Wal-mart and invest in a portable DVD player. Trust me. You will be glad you did.
If that's not an option, you can sing songs, play "I Spy", and pack lots of crayons and snacks. Make a stop every two hours or so to let the kids stretch and play a while.
Be careful, and GOOD LUCK!

Bring snacks and toys and portable dvd player, it will keep them quiet so you can drive and not worry about all the questions the four year old would ask.

in addition to what has been said... ensure your child's safety...don't forget to have your one-year old in his car seat. You'll never know what might happen. Bring along snacks and game boards or figures... stay in your cool..otherwise the journey would be a long and painful one.
