Because the US was founded by religious conservatives and the law was never overturned due to the political danger of suggesting that the cultural landscape has matured enough to repeal the law.

Purporting to marry multiple wives has been illegal from the start -- from the common law imprted with the colonists from England. It became a political issue with the rise of the Mormon and was the subject of at least two major Supreme Court decisions.
Even so, it was long tolerated among Native American customary marriage. And it concubinage has rarely been prosecuted because violatio of fornication and adultery laws are so difficult to prove. (Perhaps not so much now with DNA evidence, but now nobody cares.)
Prosecution is generally limited to statutory rape cases and child abuse: the Warren Jeffs situation.
The major way in which federal law gets involved is with respect to immigration (diplomats aside, one may not have a visa if coming to the USA to promote or practice polygamy) and social security survivors' pensions, income tax joint returns and exemption from estate tax.
Polygamy is recognized and tolerated when the husband is in the USA, typically temporarily, and his multiple wives and children are abroad. If killed on the job or in a road accident, all the wives and children may sue for workers' compensation, tort liability, etc.

I believe there are some religious and politic reasons.. but I think that it is no right either for women or men.. to have 2/3 husbands or wives.. Why??
Are u so sure that u can love more than one woman in the same time??
All the reason is LOVE... no-one believes that it is possible to love, to esteem, to respect, to satisfy to make happy... in the same way, so deeply 2/3 people in the same time.. So it is better to focus feelings, energies and attention on one per time.. If you are tired of yr wife.. well ask for the divorce.. and look for a new one.. but two toghether is foolish...

the fact is this ...do some research on polygamy and you will find that it is illegal if you marry two women , now on the other hand you can have a relationship with more than one woman but you have to be honest with them and treat them like they should be treated...3 rules to go by ...1. respect 2. honesty 3. communication everyone has their own needs and that is what this relationship requires....check

It isn't just the US, but most of the globe.
As far as reasons to outlaw it, it's probably due to the IRS not wanting to give a guy too many tax deductions...

Would you marry a woman that shared you with her other husband/s?
I would if I could marry two or three girls- one for each mood i'm in, maybe seven, or ten. She could have a guy for each mood, too. It'll be hard to get any work done, but no worries- I'm sure the bed will always be made!!
LMAO- Wake up & smell the shite!!!!

The solution: the US would prefer people cheat on their wives rather than let them marry a new one.
