I think many of them feel stifled, yes. It probably doesn't happen too much in the US though.

This is a tough question. I think they are SOME people--not just women--who follow doctrine without question. Heck, I went to Catholic school, and I could tell you stories about some people who never, ever question! But, there are also those who make a conscious decision to join orthodox religions because they like the doctrine, just as there are those who question them and/or leave them.

It all has to do with a lot of factors, especially the way you were raised. If you were raised under the strict belief that questioning religion would be a sure ticket to hell, then there is a good chance that you would try to never question it. Also, there is the factor of the Church you grew up in--if it was a forceful church, or, opposingly, a very "loving" church, questioning may never be on the forefront of your mind.

Whether they question the doctrine or not is of little relevance to the men. They make the rules and tell them what God says:
If they said, that is what I want it doesn't carry as much weight.
Like Dad said, "Take out the trash" Carry's more weight than we are suppose to take out the trash. God says [in Muslim religion}
Mohammad saw hell and most women were in there.
Telling women to be obedient to there husbands because to not be would land them in eternal torment. They knew what it was like to be tortured and bought and sold like cattle so felt powerless to change their situation. Female circumcision is practiced to ensure they didn't have any pleasure in sex.
So they could concentrate on pleasing their husbands.
Using religion as an excuse for this painful and cruel practice.
Mothers did it to their daughters, which without the firm belief it was God's will probably wouldn't do that to them knowing how painful it was.

Yes, I think more than 90% of the women in extreme religions simply follow their doctrine without questioning.. Because they aren't given a choiche most of the time and the price for disobeying is a high one.

QueenHag, you'd be surprised at how many women are opressed in the US, not just in religion but women who are beaten, abused, raped, etc. The statistics are much higher than people think.

I think that women who live in these extreme religions have been indoctrinated/brainwashed to believe that they have no power, and no right to speak, etc. They've been told to blindly obey parts of the bible that have been grossly misinterpreted and taken out of context. They are taught that they don't have the right to question doctrine. Check out the Dateline special (you may be able to find it online) about women in polygamist families.

Anytime you see this though, it indicates a corruption in the religion--The golden rule at the heart of almost any religion is to love your neighbor as yourself, and treat others the way you would want to be treated.

I used to be a member of an extreme religious group. I was somewhat rebellious and never fitted in. But to answer your question, women are told that their salvation depends on their obedience to God. And God tells them to obey their husband. It isn't that they don't question it, it is that they accept the higher power. I've seen very good marriages based on this principle, also very bad ones. It asks a tremendous amount from a woman - men have it much easier.
As for not having a life - well, it depends on what you want from life. Most women are happy, safe in the knowledge that their after life is secure, that they're doing what God wants. Of course, in this country, it is different, becuase you have to fight against the "unbelievers". Gives a bit of grist to your mill, if you know what I mean. I can't speak for those who live in religious countries where everyone has the same beliefs.

Why should we focus on women? If a religion is extreme as you mean it, both the men and women following that doctrine are not living a real life.

i dont know much about any other religion but speaking for Islam... if you truly research islam you will realise that it is THE only religion that gives the woman her rights... she has a very high status!! unlike some religions women are NOT filthy wen on there menses!
no one is allowed to hurt the woman without dire consequences!!

sadly there are also muslims who FORCE there women and men to do what they think is right without giving reason and mostly without even knowing WHY themselves.

95% of Muslims i know are not forced into doing anything! they actually read about there religion and know the facts and reasons and understand and believe before they act!

I think you're very biased here. From my experience, women are more inquisitive as to what to believe or not. I'm catholic, and I haven't met a lady that doesn't have a personal life because of her religion.

What you call extreme religion is more extreme persons. Some people can take literarily and too strict any religion. But that's not what a religion is about.

First of all, Christian aren't extreme. If someone who claims to be Christian but is too extreme, then he/she isn't at all a Christian. But that's another and very complex subject...

Anyway, I think Muslim and Islam women on the contrary, have no lives-- to say in a matter of speaking. They just follow what they have to from the start and carry their burdens... (true) Christians have a choice to believe and love God. Women of Islam start hiding themselves and being taught all of their traditions and hating all else.

So, yes, I agree with you. It's very sad...
