The animals that have authenticated ages live in zoos, where they have expert treatment from vets, advanced drugs, good food and protection from predators. We just don't know how long animals live for in the wild.

What we do know is that average human life expectancy has more than doubled in the past 100 years because of advances in medical knowledge.

That's an interesting theory on the surface, except that elephants don't live for a century; pretty much only tortoises. And I'm not sure I'd want that metabolism or lifestyle.

But yeah, considering dogs drink out of the toilet and eat stuff off the floor, and wild animals will snatch pretty much anything that crawls along the dirt, it's kind of amazing they live as long as they do, and it kind of puts our own germ phobias into perspective doesn't it.

Not all of them do. The fittest survive, and that is why the species keeps ameliorating. The ones who are prone to illness die. In humans too, there are some distant doctor-free areas where some people live to be a hundred. The rest die at 40, though. It is the same with animals.
