Does anybody know which foods or herbs that will act as a natural laxative? I prefer to avoid the store bought chemicals that are sold as laxatives.

prune juice is great.
try high fibre foods and plenty of fruit. Grapes are really good.
Also try a cup of boiled water (cooled) with brown sugar.
Failing that, a nice hot curry maybe!?

A handful of almonds or other nut seems to be helpful. Prunes or prune juice and sometimes just having coffee in the morning can help move things along. There are also many herbal teas that can help with this. Check out the organic section of the grocery store. It'll say something on the label that it's a detox tea or colon cleanser. That sort of thing. I don't think they taste very good. I'll brew a cup and sweeten it. Then pour it over ice just so I can drink it. But they work too.

Cereals and grains that are rich in fiber(you have to read labels.) If it says 20% or higher of your daily fiber dose, this is a good thing. Some cereals like Mothers and crackling oat bran are very high in fiber.Read labels. Google foods high in fiber. Get it from food, not chemicals, you are right about that.

Foods: cabbage, sauerkraut, any of the fibrous foods - pears are the most fibrous fruit.

Herbs - psyllium husks - whatever they are (fiber).

Oil: My experience has been 1 teaspoon of light or extra light olive oil at night will "grease the skids".

Drink your 64 oz (2 liters) of water a day, too.

My health food store lady has me on magnesium supplements, because she says they relax the bowel.

I need the extra help because I am a diabetic who is also fighting a systemic yeast syndrome and that syndrome can block you up.

the papaya fruit is a good laxative. Its delicious and it really works. Just eat a good sized portion, or a whole if it can fit in your palm.
