I want to learn Hakka, which is quite a rare dialect of Chinese. I would like to know of any books or tutors that I can learn from.
Also if I am unable to obtain any teaching material, what would be the nearest equivalent, Mandarin or Cantonese.

That's going to be a bit difficult.

Hakka-Chinese lessons, Bernard Mercer
ISBN: B0008BP3AI, 1930 Sheldon Press
might be hard to find though,

A Chinese-English Dictionary: Hakka-Dialect, MacIver
ISBN: 0899863442

Also maybe someone here can help you:

and some background information from that site:

more online stuff
http://www.chinalanguage.com/Language/Hakka/Tables/index.html
and a taiwan version
http://www.i1.net/~alchu/hakka/toihakka.htm

good luck.

I don't know where are you located. If you are located in Singapore, where I live, just drop by at Bras Basah Complex. There are a few chinese book store, I am sure you are able to get some tapes/cd there packaged together with a book. Or some annual book expo, they usually sell that.

I remembered buying a package that teaches Hokkien. And the explaination were in English.

i though the Hakka was a tribal dance done by the New Zealand rugby team before each game - if that's what you're after, i know a lot of people who could teach you!
