Chuwawwa? Never heard of it. However, I do know of a chihuahua, and I think that some kid on this Disney show also thinks their ears are "freakishly large compared to their bodies". Hmm... Coincidence?

These answers are weird. Like the "fact" that chis get crazy when they get old because of their size/head shape. And the not having healthy characteristics of a "normal" dog.
Chis (despite being so altered from the original wolf shape) are actually better off than a lot of breeds as far as communication goes. Their ears stand so all the ear communication can be read (standing, pressed back against the head etc.). Their eyes are free of hair in front of them so expression can be read there. AND we leave their tails intact so that communication is readable. As for health, chis are no less healthy than any other breed. Personally, I think they are beautiful little dogs. AND I love the big ears. These dogs were breed to be companion dogs and they are well suited for the job.

correction- chihuahua
I am not so sure I have a chihuahua at home right now. I would say because every dogs have diffrent abilitties and i think their large ears are for listening. Like I got chihuahua and a mud. My chihuahua uses his ears to listen and my chihuahua would wake up my mud when he hears a noise and my mud would use her size/ sharp teeth to attack that thing they did that many times

You think a chihuahua's ears are big? What about a Basset Hound, now those are some BIG ears. Chihuahuas aren't weird, they are adorable.

If you think Chihuahuas have weird, oversized ears, look at a Cardigan Welsh Corgi: http://www.akc.org/breeds/cardigan_welsh_corgi/index.cfm
They look even bigger in real life - when I worked for Vets, I always thought they looked funny. Not many of them around, though - most Corgis are Pembroke Welsh Corgis: http://www.akc.org/breeds/pembroke_welsh_corgi/
their ears are better proportioned.

Chihuahuas have been genetically modified by breeding into something that might appeal to humans, but hasn't left them with many features of a healthy dog.

breeders inbreed them to make them smaller, but their brains have remained the same size for all time which means they go crazy when they get old. their brains start outgrowing their heads - litterally.
i guess the ears haven't gotten smaller, either.
