My husband is a US citzen and is living here on a spouse visa. He is not working yet and has no income whatsoever, but we still have to pay rent and council tax to the council for him. Is this right or is there a possibility we shouldnt have to pay since he gets no money?

council tax is for the property, not the person. you'd get 25% discount if you lived alone, but otherwise even if you are just sharing the address with a friend you have to pay it.

I don't know what council rent is. I would think that anywhere in the world if you couldn't pay rent you would be put out into the street. Landlords are in it for the money, honey. They act heartless. They can not go around letting people stay rent free. If they let your husband get by with it then they would have to let every one else and they would go broke.

You didn't say whether you were working. If you are then you pay the rent.

You may have to move in with your parents.

My sisters job went to India and she would get little small jobs but not any more. Bill collector are calling to hound her for money she doesn't have and won't have because she can't get a job.

She knows they call because she looks at the caller ID and she doesn't know the number and it is a call out of OK City, OKlahoma and she doesn't know anyone there and beleives it to be a bill collection agency. They would call daily.

If bill collection agencies didn't call and try to collect from people that owe them then they would go broke, But alas some people just can't pay. The agencies call because there are people who can pay but don't and they hope to wear you down and they are trying to verifly that that is your phone number. If they can get you to answer the call then they can get a lawyer to sue you for the money you don't have. They think that you can or will coherse your kin folk to pay your bills. They don't care how they get it. You could rob a bank; they don't care.

If you expect the lamp posts to shine at night, your bins to be emptied, a copper for a crime, or a fireman for a fire, you pay. Everyone pays council tax, and that`s what it`s for. SERVICES. Mines £1000pa. If you live on you own or are in receipt of benefits you get a reduction. But everyone has to pay rent unless you are claiming income support. If you are a low earner visit your social security office for information on benefits. But why isn`t he working? There are plenty (too bloody many) of Eastern Europeans over here who have found jobs.

Well there is not really any reason I guess u can give - but I do know that the council will take anything , any amount of money per week/month like if she says ok I can only afford £5 a week to pay back they would take that. But if she doesnt offer a solution like that then her wadges could be arrested.. That happened to my friend like - is pretty crap but her own fault

is he using the services provided by the council rent?

is it expected that he is subsidised by UK tax payers? I thought this was un-american; would I get support I I went to the US? the UK often has reciprocal arrangements if this is the case.
what income do you have?
If he went back to the US would he be persecuted for his views, can he claim reffugee status?
