"a sealed transparent globe or similar container in which plants are grown."

Terrariums are sort of a combination decorative item/science experiment. You get a huge glass jar, dump some dirt in it, stick in a few plants, water it and put on the lid. It creates a closed habit which will, for a time, achieve ecological homeostasis... an automatic, self-adjusting balance of atmospheric gasses and moisture content.

The earth, as described in Genesis, was conceived by the writers as being like a terrarium. They pictured the entire span of existence to be water and earth, surrounded by mountains, and topped with a SOLID STRUCTURE called the 'firmament'... i.e., the sky; essentially, a 'terrarium'... a big jar.

They conceived that the sun, moon, and stars were affixed to the solid firmament. Heaven was on the other side of the firmament... i.e., on the 'other side' of the sky.
