I look at some of the spelling and grammar on some of these postings and wonder what the hell is going on at schools these days.

No kidding...it's terrible. My neice says they're pretty much allowed to spell however the word sounds in her school. What's the use of having English classes then??

WHY THE SPELL CHECKER?!?! If people are smart enough to figure out to use this and many other sites, then surely they should be smart enough to comprehend basic English.

The poor english is seen all over the place - I see it all the time in my job and it scares me how bad the english of fully grown people is, let alone that of the schools. Look at some of the writing on this page alone! It started off well, but then went down hill very fast!!!

I'm 21, and even I never used the type of language my 14 year old sister uses all the time. When I'm around her, all I hear is...
Awite Bruv? Innit?! Dood (not Dude - but dood), and when she's on Messenger, it does my head in! I cannot understand a word she writes!

OMG, LV, PMSL, JKS, LOL, BLKS, SKL, BTW, LKS

I know what some of them mean, but surely kids of today should be able to write properly?

She is 14 and has difficulty with spelling. Everything else she is top of the class in, but she just cannot spell certain words. She is not Dyslexic, she can read perfectly, but every word she spells is spelt phoenetically...
school becomes skool
Nation become nayshun

I help her and spell check her written home work, but apart from that, she's on her own, as her teachers do not help her.

She is a very bright girl, and wants to do a lot in life, and I'm sure with her confidence, she will go far, but her spelling lets her down. All because kids are not taught the basics these days.

I can assure you that I teach spelling and grammar in my classes. Many of the mistakes are typos I'm sure, but as for the others...they all need a good slap, because there is a spell checker right above the question and answer boxes. Some people are just lazy.

I hope there are no school children on this site! I think we need to ask have schools improved since we left? And frankly yes infant schools are space age these days.My seven year old can use a spell check and spell!

And remember that British English is spelt totally differently from American and the grammer rules are different too. Plus think of all the people who's first language is not English! Poor souls! All of them use this site.

Have you read 'Eats, shoots and leaves' you would love it!

I was at school from 1989 until 2003. As far as spelling goes we had spelling practise every week at primary school, and none at secondary school. I don't really remember getting many grammar lessons at all.

My dyslexic friend at secondary school had grammar lessons, and was able to tell me many fascinating facts about English grammar, which I had used for ages but never conciously knew. The point of me telling that is to illustrate that unless you suffer from learning disorders, then the grammar of your native language should be intuitive. The lack of grammar on Yahoo answers says to me that people simply don't care about it, rather than lacking the opportunity to learn it.

I recently read an article in the Guardian Weekly about children in the UK opting out of learning a foreign language. I think this is a very good idea, since it seems most haven't yet mastered English! Speaking dialect is fine, if you only want to speak to people who understand your dialect. Writing dialect is nonsense. Young people should be taught to write and speak grammatically correctly so that they can communicate with a wide range of other people.

Nothing...

They create a safe environment where the natural curiosity of youngsters will empower them to seek out for themselves, in a non-hierarchical manner, data & situations which will enable them to develop the tools necessary to build self-esteem, a social conscience & a better world where all are valued regardless of their abilities, & where the diversity of socio-economic & cultural backgrounds enriches the whole of society & we can delight in the fact that mankind is growing into the future in a wholly positive way & developing structures which support this onward progression.

Or...

Its a means of dividing the ones with brains from the no-hopers, so that those with brains can sit for & pass useless GCSEs & A-levels, whilst the no-hopers can get on with impregnating a bunch of stupid 14 year old girls, nicking cars & sniffing glue.

Take your choice?

The business of Education is gradually getting out-sourced from schools to private teaching institutions and persons who take over after school timings on a daily basis, or, some times, even within school timings when they are hired by schools to "supplement" formal teaching in schools by 'formal' teachers! So, parents and 'value education' champions, beware!

Hair dressing and Brick laying....apparently it's to give those less academic a head start in something.
What a cop out....the majority of teenagers will opt for the hairdressing course over Latin or Geography....what a ridiculous idea!
As far as spelling...I'm sure they learn how to write in text language and use abbreviations like OMG!
