Why stones are layed in substation

In substations the stone is used to cover the ground grid to provide proper insulation for personnel working in the substation. Under fault conditions mainly there may me difference in potential on different points on the ground grid and therefore if proper insulation is not made this could result in electric shock of personnel. In a nut shell the stone provides this insulation.

Additionally the stone is laid up to a certain level to the fence of the station to help keep away wildlife which can cause unnecessary shutdown of equipment.
