I think he was probably going to play a prank, but then thought better of it - See the first link below.
On the other hand, there is such a bird as a Snipe and he could have been an ornithologist?! - See the second link.

its an old joke to get somebody that doesnt know their way around out somewhere and make them look like a fool because they dont know what a snipe is either.

actually a snipe is a bird. but the idea is to get you out someplace and have you hold the sack while they run the snipe up to you. usually you are supposed to make some stupid noise and then after a while, you notice that there are people standing there laughing.

happened to a friend of mine when we were kids 30 years ago

i've got considered distinctive human beings at stages with their snipe looking kit. many times it's going to be a Remington seven hundred, or some thing relatively unique, in .338 Lapua, and with no longer in user-friendly terms a extensive tactical scope and bipod, yet a laser, variety finder, often times a flashlight, and all this coated in ghile fabric or camouflage paint. interestingly the extra money you pour right into a rifle the extra effective this is for looking snipes, despite if it weighs too plenty to hold it secure for something previous 200m.

Although probably meant as a joke, a Snipe is actually a bird. This is where the military term "Sniper" comes from. You had to be a good shot to hit these from distance.

Okay! Must be an American thing. In Europe, and in the Asia-Pacific region, snipe are small birds that are considered a delicacy. They are either walked up or shot over dogs. Where else does a police or military marksman get his name??

It is an old prank...and not a nice one. Maybe sometime you could catch a rerun of a "Cheers" episode. The gang took Cliff out in the woods looking for Snipes and then they raced back to cheers laughing about how gullible he was.

that has been a joke for years, they take you into the woods and tell you to hold a bag open while they supposedly chase the snipe to you to catch in the bag. they have been known to leave the person there for hours before going back.
