Grilled cheese sandwiches (made with grated cheddar and a thin slice of good ham, served with ketchup)

Creamy mashed potatoes (I make them with real butter and sour cream. Everyone knows 'comfort' and 'calories' are synonomous, right?)

Hot chocolate - with marshmallows if it's a really bad day

Sliced tomatoes on toast (with salt and freshground pepper. Ok, so this one, especially on grain bread, is actually good for you!)

Bacon. (Oh dear, terrible score healthwise! But that crispy meaty saltiness is just so comforting...)

Jerky. (See note on bacon - except substitute 'chewy' for 'crispy')

Scrambled eggs (with toast-and-cheez-whiz, never fails to evoke memories of breakfast in bed, whether lovingly served by a concerned mom when you were sick, or a significant other spoiling you...)

Food is a significant aspect of our culture and of our character; when I was overseas in Korea and suffering from culture shock, I went through a time of seeking out bread (instead of the three-meals-a-day rice), ham, cheese, potatoes, chicken, and other familiar foodstuffs from which I could make a semblance of 'Western' meals. It was a stage (we both love Korean food!) but one which helped us deal with homesickness and disorientation.

Truly, cheese (not a regular part of the Asian diet, and usually hard-to-find/expensive in Korea) was a major 'comfort food' for us. In fact - if you don't tell anyone - we used to exult when we found large-size jars of Cheez Whiz 'on the black market'!

Cheesy oven-baked mashed potato.
(Boil your potatoes; mash them with butter; stir in a load of grated cheddar; put into a shallow casserole dish and smooth over; add more cheese to the top; bake in the oven for about 20 minutes, until the cheese has melted and the top has gone crispy).

Either that, or ice-cream. Or bread-and-butter pudding. And custard. And rice pudding.

Think I should stop, now... getting hungry!

Chocolate, but for sheer comfort factor it has to be proper chunks, none of this small bar rubbish you buy in a newsagents but proper fat milk chocolate bars that are supposed to last a few days.

This soup my mother used to make for me when I was sick and in bed. It was water, garlic, salt, pepper with some sourdough bread chunks floating in it. Sounds horrid looks like barf, but man o man did it taste good and knocked whatever was wrong with me out. I miss eating it a lot. Thanks for the memory.
