Because there really isn't any god. If there was a god and that god cared what we thought about him, he'd have no problem making that clear to us. The reason that there are so many different religions is that they are all made up. There is no god around to set us straight.
And for those who are going to go rant about "God doesn't show himself because it would take away our freewill", that's nonsense. You have less choice if your god doesn't reveal himself. Only if you know him to exist can you choose whether to follow him or not.

That is the close to right question.
You said
"Not bashing religion but genuinely don't understand it. Each to their own and all that. What do you think?"
So the real question is
"If religion is so enlightening then why AM I so confused about religion?"
There are no short cuts; be patient with yourself and with others (yes I know that can be difficult. LOL)
I would suggest that you go in to the woods away from civilization (sic) and there in that beautiful Church that has not been Idolatrously forged by the hands of man's vanity,
ask God yourself.
And ask God for guidance to the path you have been meant to walk.
Be still in your body and soul, pay attention with all your senses. Be the ear that sees and the eye that hears. open yourself to God and God alone. Feel God's presence in every beauty that surrounds you and is within you.
God's voice you may hear, still and small, but fret not if you don't for these things will be revealed to you.
For you I recommend that you listen to Bette Meddlers song
"The Rose"
and Know God is Love.
The only things you need to bring with you is Faith, and patience. And Pay Attention: Before, during and ever after. For God speaks to you all the time, you just do not hear. Pay Attention.
Do this and I promise you that you will know by spring.

We need to get back to Christ, for years there has been a watering down of religion/christianity, we wont a modern version people say.... many are new christians and they speak in fear but with great need, this breeds confusion, christian leaders need to be careful..... There are many versions of christianity, and many desire to be right, to lead. That just means to be acceptable by God, that is a beautiful thing, bu we must be patient and always inward searching, very honest with ourselves and come to the Lord with an open heart and mind.
It is hard to know where to start, i tell people to read a King JamesVersion bible, as this is the most authentic available edition and read Matthew then Romans to James.
I think matthew mark luke and john straight through may seem to much to soon for a searcher, it may do, i thin they tell Jesus story again and again in different ways. Remember the bible is not a novel so i'd recommend not to read like one.
If you truly want to know, pray for the Lord to open your heart, don't ask for a sign as a new reader the bible is a powerful book and it will touch your heart. Just ask the Lord for merc patience and praise him for being God and loving you. Read two or three chaopter at a time at most, then pray thanks to close and bless the Lord for he is God, don't be ashamed be on your own, God will watch over you. The angels will rejoice, and i'll pray for you, God bless, feel fee to contact me if you need help.

I'm not confused about religion and nor should anyone be: it's all bullsh*t. Spirituality is where you want to be to find all the answers about yourself, the collective Self and your relationship with the Universe.
After 3 years of hard study into this area in order to find all the answers, the single best book out there on this subject is The Disappearance of the Universe: Straight Talk About Illusions, Past Lives, Religion, Sex, Politics and the Miracles of Forgiveness, by Gary Renard.
Life-changing stuff and a lot more beautiful than organised religion which is little more than a POLITICAL, FEAR-INDUCING tool of control and destruction.

The reason that there is so much confusion lies in the definition of religion. Religion is MAN'S view of God. Somewhere down the line, man felt as if he had "poetic license" when it came to interpretation of the Scriptures and he took a wrong turn when he decided to take what he understood, coupled with what he was willing to obey, mix it with his OWN individual cover-up or justification for sin, put that in a box and call it "serving God" or God's will". If you think back, it's not hard to find man's first act of religion in the Bible. Remember when Adam and Eve's eyes were first opened to sin? The Bible says that when they "discovered their shame", they "sewed together fig leaves for a covering of their nakedness". This knowledge of shame and nakedness was sinful and they KNEW it! So, instead of trying to find forgiveness(granted, forgiveness would've been a novel concept), they tried to COVER UP their sin! Thus, religion is born. They JUSTIFIED what they'd done by THEIR OWN MEANS (fig leaf clothes) instead of obedience (not touching the forbidden tree).

Religion is confusing because it speaks through different language (which belongs to past and to different people than we are) than we speak. It is the language of the emotional intelligence (poetical language) .Emotional language present truth through symbols. Emotional intelligence care for our benefit distinguishing bad and good. Due to very personal creation of symbols and long time distance from the place of happening it is almost impossible (without the chain of honest teachers from the ancient times till today) to recognise the message. The same situation is with fairy tales and myths. They deal with the same question (they have the same intention as religion), how to perform the best economy of the personal energy. How to be happy person. Walt Disney's Pinocchio reveals answer treated in all of existing great religions, all worthy fairy tales myths and legends.
Happiness exists but must be earned, through giving the best of ourselves in thoughts, feelings and deeds, permanently, but without exaggeration. This is the core of humans interest, core of any religion or teaching.Unfortunately this and nothing else.

Mans religions are not enlightening, but as you said confusing. Because they get distorted through time by mans wisdom.
Enlightenment cannot be achieved through thinking, but by
quieting the mind. Enlightenment is a feeling, a knowing, that one is a part of Creation. As well as all of our spirits are. When one achieves enlightenment. They no longer worry about immature things like, "my religion is better than your religion."

Putting aside the debate of whether God exists, whoever wrote the scriptures must be human, and human beings are prone to errors. Errors come in many different forms - from small things like spelling mistakes to larger ones such as logical errors. These man-made errors were established so long ago, that it makes subsequent generations find it difficult to understand. Moreover, there can be different interpretations of the same materials. Hence the confusion.

Because people started concentrating on Religion instead of Spirituality. We are here to experience things for God and be spiritual -- not to contrain our being through strict religious doctrine. It's so much "hell and damnation" and arguing over what religion is (right). God is all loving so why would he choose one religion over another.
I feel there is room for everyone and if everyone would pay attention to their own soul and stop trying to persuade or push their beliefs down the throats of others -- it would be more harmony. Everyone has their own chart to follow to make it Home.

If there atre already enough questions, why are you asking yet another, then?
And if you don't understand religion, how will you understand an answer?
If you are sincerely interested in God as we Christians understand Him, and aren't just time wasting, then I haven't got time or enough space to answer here - send me a message/specific question on the link.

religion is a collection of beliefs shared by similar kind of people with similar experience and similar level of understading and wisdom in life.
not all humans share the same environment across the globe. people have different views of life and nature.
religion is part of human mental health, its a necessity of all humans. so everybody supports their own religion in order be in existence. they make up their own rules. actually there's really no right or wrong in religions its all bunches of beliefs.
the truth is what that matters, if somebody has the truth, nothing else matters to him.
EVERBODY have to start to believe at first until he grows and realizes to leave it behind.
GOD DO EXISTS BUT ONLY IN THE MINDS OF FEARFUL PEOPLE UNTIL BECOME WISE.
