In my opinion the Affinia Manhattan @ 371 Seventh Avenue, I stayed in a Junior Suite for $199 plus tax and it was beautiful.

The Plaza - right next to Central Park, 5*, featured in so many movies too!!
Waldorf Astoria is probably the next best.
After that, I'd sat Marriott Times Square, right at the centre of the action!!
New York is the best place I've ever been so I know you'll have fun!!

I like staying at The Skyline. Convienent to about everything. BIG, clean, recently refurbished rooms, FREE parking ( a definate plus in Manhattan) and the rooms run about $100 for a double.

The more modern ones that are nice are the Millenium, Rihga Royal, W, and Soho Grand. They're all nice and sleek and not so old-money stodgy.
