i think a mixture of the two is always best...
u dont want a guy who is overly sweet that he lacks a backbone and does not exude some type of confidence or doesnt keep u on your toes somewhat or a sick puppydog who cant make decisions or be a man when need be..
but you also do not equally want someone who..
you cant relly on when ur upset, who is irresponsible, abusive, a cheater, or just overall disrespectful...

Didn't Hugh Grant make off with a prostitute when he was with Liz Hurley... doesn't sound very gentleman like to me.... you shouldn't have given the examples... everyone knows that women would have Russell Crowe over Hugh Grant any day on looks and attitude alone... I'm not sure that I would call Russell Crowe a cad in every sense of the word....

The question should be rephrased with no examples that would sway a woman either way.

Although.. shoot, looking at some of the responses... I had better get a little meaner!

A guy who is decent, thoughtful and caring, without all that old-fashioned gentlemanly sh*t, but is also able to be naughty, sexy and dirty, without behaving like a selfish idiot (i.e a cad) in order to prove it. I'm talking about the the kind of man who tends to treat others as he'd like to be treated and thinks for himself, without needing to consult some antiquated Gentleman's Manual on How to Behave Around Ladies.

IMO, cads make selfish lovers and the gentlemen are just cads in disguise. However, this isn't a problem because there are lots of lovely men in this world who are actually neither once you get to know them!

PS: For the record, neither HG or RC float my boat but I would say HG is the cutest of the two.

Cads are fun for a while but there comes a point in every woman's life when only the best will do. If you want a long term partner then its a gentleman every time for me.

Who needs a guy who lets you down and is selfish long term? Short term until the excitement has gone yes ...forever no thanks!!

Excuse the intrursion, but there is also the combination of the two, the man who acts the cad or rouge but is, at heart, a gentleman or the gentlman who has a rougish streak, Think Errol Flynn in Robin Hood and Captain Blood.

Gentleman definitely. Long gone are the days where a woman is wooed by a man, these days it seems to be all about sex!

There is nothing more attractive than a guy who treats you like a lady and respects you as such.

A gentleman who could be a cad if he needed to. But your choices of men aren't good, Sun.

i was momentarily confused about who was meant to be the cad in your example ,as Hugh does do that too in his films. but i suppose you are speaking of in their private life. well i think i prefer nasty crowe as he hasn't been caught doing other ungentlemanly things ,with call girls yet.

o.k i am just as confused as you now, but i think a mixture is sometimes o.k.
