The combination of the toxins/venom & the puncture wound from the barb caused Irwin to die of an apparent cardiac arrest, with most damage being inflicted by tears to arteries or other main blood vessels. It is also possible that he died quickly as a result of a punctured aorta.
He had a penetrating injury to the left front of his chest. He had lost his pulse and wasn't breathing.

There is a zig-zag pattern to a stingrays barb that allows it to easily puncture but creates resistance on the way out, causing mor damage. Also Steve Irwins ches was also punctured which would have allowed seawater to pour into his heart. People with holes in their heart still have their chest in one piece to cover the hole

When you're born with a hole in your heart it needs to be repaired. For a baby, it usually closes in the first several dayson it's own, if not, it's done surgically. You can't "live" with a hole in your heart. Your heart won't circulate effectively and your blood pressure won't maintain long term.

As for Steve Erwin, He was alive long enough to pull the barb out himself. This created a hole, which was earlier closed off by the barb. Now I realize it was probably to prevent the toxins from going into him because it would have paralysed his heart and lunds among other organs, causing death, but it also allowed for massive bleeding into the chest and for sea water to go into his chest. When people began to do CPR on him, they were forcing blood out of his system because of the hole in his heart (in an effort to keep blood circulating to his brain) and also circulating whatever amount of toxin DID get into him. It was just a bad situation and an unfortunate accident.

Cause people are born with holes in their hearts at times. He was pierced by the stingray from the out side. Same thing happens when you get shot in your heart with a bullet or an arrow.

The stingray puts toxins into the body. The hole in the heart is something that you were born with.

Because when he pulled out the barb, it did more damage to his heart. Maybe if he hadn't pulled it out, they might have been able to save him... maybe not. It is very sad though.
