The FE was a family of ford bigblock engines started in 1958 and manufactured in ford cars/trucks until about 76 they came in various sizes from 332ci,352,360,361,390,406,410,427,and 428 and included some of ford's most famous performance and racing engines the 427 sohc and 428 cobrajet .

I think the above does answer the question well also. The "FE" designation is said to have come from either "Ford Engine" or "Ford Edsel", there are aguments either way. The 390, 428CJ and 429SCJ are all part of this engine family. It is a long-skirt cast-iron block & head engine, very stout & quite durable, but the oil-pump shaft is the weak link as well as the oil system.

well there were a lot of the "FE" engines. try going to wikipedia.com and searching for ford fe engines. I did it just a few days ago, even thought i am quite familair with these engines. It tells a lot about them. probably can explain it better than i can hope it helps
