Not only was it a custom in the Arab society to Engage/Marry a young girl it was also common in the Jewish society. The case of Mary the mother of Jesus comes to mind, in non biblical sources she was between 11-14 years old when she conceived Jesus. Mary had already been "BETROTHED" to Joseph before conceiving Jesus. Joseph was a much older man. therefore Mary was younger than 11-14 years of age when she was "BETHROED" to Joseph. We Muslims would never call Joseph a Child Molester, nor would we refer to the "Holy Ghost" of the Bible, that "Impregnated" Mary as a "Rapist" or "Adulterer".
According to the Priest of Saint Mary's Catholic Church: "Mary was approximately 14 years old when she got pregnant with Jesus. Joseph, Mary's Husband is believed to be around 36. Mary was only 13 when she married Joseph. When she first was arranged with Joseph she was between 7 to 9 years old."

According to the "Oxford Dictionary Bible" commentary, Mary (peace be upon her) was was 12 years old when she became impregnated.

So if I want to be as silly and ridiculous as many of the Christians, I would respond to them by saying that Mary was psychologically and emotionally devastated for getting pregnant at a very young age. And speaking of "child molesting", since most Christians believe that Jesus is the Creator of this universe, then why did GOD allow himself to enter life through a 12-year old young girl's vagina? Please note that we Muslims love and respect Allah Almighty, Mary, Jesus and Allah's Message to the People of the Book (The Jews and Christians). In other words, we Muslims would never make fun of Christianity through such childish topic like this one as many ridiculous Christians do make fun of Islam through our Prophet's (peace be upon him) marriage.

It was very common then for a girl that young would be in an arranged marriage. it was practiced wide! I'm not sure about The other Christians that may have answered some stupid remarks but all i know is what i know and i study alot.i don't just say things because thats what my Pastor told me or anyone else said to me! I took the time out to pray and look for the Right answers!

All organized religion is a bit screwed up to be honest, and I have never met a single person who believes 100% in their own faith without doubt or question.

Back in the early times of the world, life expectancy was short, you were old when you were 30, and marriage happened around 10-12, with children soon after. Its the old "old enough to bleed, old enough to breed" attitude. These days as live expectancy is greater it seems the youth of today are seen in a different light, and the rules have all changed. I'm surprised pedophiles and the like don't use that argument, but just like the medical science of curing toothache with a hot poker down the ear has gone out of date, so have the marriage laws :P

Of course, with over population and people killing each other in the name of some god or another who teaches to love everyone, one has to wonder if things changed for the best or the worst?

What are the sources about Mary's age? I don't think we know how old she was. We just guess because she was about to get married to Joseph that she was around the age girls got married at the time - probably a teenager, but I wouldn't guess 11. Also, supposedly Mary had been asked by the Holy Spirit and had accepted the honor of bringing God's son to the world. Now you believe that or not, the point is that Joseph married her knowing she was pregnant, so he saved her life practically, so he is one of the nicest people in history and religion of all times. He also respected her completely. So why would you say anything about Joseph? He didn't marry her for his own pleasure.

You have to remember that life was much shorter back then, all the way up to the 19th century. Life expectancy in Jesus' time was somewhere between 35 and 40 years. Women typically married at age 13 or so, but when that represents 1/3rd of your life span, it makes sense. It's not right to judge when God implanted Mary with Jesus, as God can do anything God wants to. There is no one who has the right to judge God and certainly, human social values have absolutely nothing to do with what God does or does not do. Whatever age, it happened at exactly the right time for exactly the right reasons.

Most likely she was 12. God knew what He was doing when He set the age of awakening of a female at that age, it is todays women who have made the practice of women not having children until they are older. Everything that went into women changing from the common practice of women getting married around 12 to forcing it to a latter age. It is spurred on by the wish for women to receive more power and influence, as well as by older women not wanting more competition. It has been an organized "quietly" organized movement. I accidently observed on such meeting 10 years ago in Saginaw Michigan. They operate very smoothly. I assume that this whole monogamy is the only way thing happened the same way, cuz monogamy is definately not a Biblical concept. I think there was probably a reason God guided us to keep men in leadership positions, but if we do not open our eyes and start doing a better job and treat women fairere then this back lash womens movement will charge on possibly doing every one damage when some powerful woman has to make a decision and it gets made with emotion instead of logic.

I'm not sure what your real question is, but Mary having a child at say 13-14 years old was not unusual for the culture at the time. Most Christan's believe that God/Jesus/The Holy Spirit (the Trinity) created the universe. Jesus became as a human being in order to communicate directly with mankind.
And many Christians, myself including, respect Islam and the people who are true to their faith belief and its practices.
There is but One true God . . . but many faith beliefs surrounding the One true God.
At least that is my perspective.

I'm just wondering why this has become a sight for people to air their religious beliefs. I'm not against any religion, I just don't understand why you would choose this sight, and use it to air your obviously personal opinions in the form of a question.
Is this really a question that you want answered?

Okay then, according to what you have written, she was 12.

What exactly is your point?

Yeah, you really sound respectful. I and the majority of my friends are Christian have never uttered one single word about Muslims or any other religion. As a Christian we do not have to accept other religions as being the right way but we do have to respect them. I would say that you are trashing true Christians because of some childish comments made by immature people who are not true Christians at all.

i can get your point.
I, as a christian, respect islam, becoz it ultimately follows the same god as in christianity.
well, truly, history is gone. it'l be very difficult 4 us to ever understand the things tht ur saying
and i believe tht if we follow the PRINCIPLES of our respective religions, other than wondering WHO WAS WHAT (molester or rapist), our lives would be more focussed towards spirituality.
eg, if a christian just follows christ's commandment of LOVING HIS NEIGHBOR, without being diverted by other negative seeming elements of his religion, he wud be much better
