The plantain is normally eaten as a starchy staple food in some countries. But it IS a fruit.

The plantain is a close relative of the banana family and is a fruit. They are very good to eat green but need to be cooked. When completely black they are ripe, but I don't remember if my mother cooked them ripe.

If you mean the cooking plantain, popular in Latin America and the Caribbean, it should be categorized under starches, not fruit.

bananas, fruits, by the way, starches are complex carbohydrates, which could be found in vegetables too. It's not a name for a category of a fruit or a vegetable
