No. The Irish tried just that after the second world war, and look where that got them, until they joined the EU. Even if Britain is much bigger, the problems would still be the same. And imagine all the smuggling that would ensue, because people unavoidably would want somethin that was not available at home. Starting with bananas...

nicely, for this to ensue, Britain could might desire to take a step into the previous, i.e. back into the medieval era. Then, Britain could be on the mercy of nature - a famine could have the potential to kill 1000's. the rationalization medieval England escaped the worst of the ecu famines in comparison to different worldwide places is with the aid of the fact it relied extra heavily on commerce, allowing it to import in circumstances of disaster. we would additionally loose out on rather some what we take with none attention, think of roughly it; not extra curries (as rice does not boost nicely in our climate and rather a number of the spices are imported), bananas, oranges, etc. it could be an analogous concern to WWII rationing. Economically, i think of self-sufficiency could be disastrous; without replace of things, the financial equipment could directly stagnate, foremost to financial turmoil (inflation, unemployment, etc).

We live on a very small, self-contained planet. NOBODY is self-sufficent. You'd be surprised how fast you would run out of many of your favorite things. Food being one of them.
