Once a group of people start preaching it, it becomes more fashionable. Christianity/hinduism, etc etc are trends. They brainwash people and they will never go out of fashiion because so many people have been convinced.

This is a great question i love it.
Well i totally agree with you and for a number of reasons, Before christianity you had paganism and all that now when Christianity came along people used to burn women for apparently being "Witches" when study shows that none of them were anything like witches they were innocent women. I have no religion and am happy that way, i especially question Christianity because unlike other religions Christianity does not accept other world religions, and such stories in the bible like Noahs Ark, God destroyed a city because they didnt believe in him basically! So gods a murderer is that really someome you want to be worshipping! I accept people with no religion, i have friends that are buddhists, christians, quakar and other religions, i just find Christianity very forceful and fake. If there is a god i dont know noone does but im happy living my life the way i do im happy i have great friends a beutiful family an amazing girlfriend who i am so happy with and love with all my heart, and a great life and every sunday i dont get up[ at 9 to go and sit in a church all day i get up and do what God "apparently" wanted us to do on Sundays . . . . Chill out!
Great question keep em coming! And i serious i really really like this question and 1 more point you see alot of people are giving some answers a thumbs down and others are even giving your question a thumbs down, thats not accepting peoples beliefs! Christians expect the world to agree with whats given to them go to church and believe in God and if you dont then in a christians eyes your not worth there time or they think less of you!!! I dont think less of anyone if there a christian doyu see my point well im off sorry for the essay but a really great question man!

People seem to forget that God is not a religion but a spiritual bond. I have issues with organised religion, but at the end of the day I do believe that there is a higher force out there. The universe and Planet Earth are just too beautiful and organised to come from accident, in the same way that you can't spill a bucket of paint and expect there to be a Mona Lisa etched out on the floor.

But at the same time, I'm at peace with myself that I will never be able to crystilize my thoughts about this higher dimension, just in the same way that it's inconcievable for an animal - say, a dog - ever to say the word 'Hello'! So as a subsitute, organised religion became the acceptance. This has had both positive and negative impacts for hundreds of centuries.

A religion is a successful cult, no more, no less. Christianity probably would be nowhere near as successful had the Romans continued to persecute Christians, rather than accepting Jehova alongside their other deities (and ultimately converting to Christianity towards the final days of the Empire).

I'm not sure "trend" is an accurate comparison. Trends tend to disappear over a (usually short) time. Religions don't, as a rule (Zoroastrianism is perhaps an exception, formerly being the state religion of Persia, one of the world's mightiest ancient empires - there are now only an estimated 200,000 Zoroastrians in the world).

Religions are superstition. Popularity does have a lot to do with it. Unlike regular superstition, there is a vested interest in keeping it going, because it gives its leaders power and influence and money.

The popularity of religion has much to do with how it's sold. First, there is a strong push to indoctrinate children. That's how the bulk of the membership gets entrenched in the religion. To gain converts and keep them, emotional arguments are used. People are given a carrot and stick. They are told how there is a loving invisible superbeing who has it all worked out and will give you lovely rewards after you die, which is the carrot. And who will burn you in Hell like the scum you were born to be if you don't join, which is the stick. Most religions use some variation of this.

There are other tactics, but most are geared to tug at emotional strings to get you to buy into their after-death promises.

Religion is a trend in the sense that it evolves with society. The Christianity of today is hardly the same as a few hundred years or a couple thousand years ago. It like to claim that it offers a consistent morality, but that morality changes with society's morals. It's more of a follower on morality, not a leader, and it is swayed by popular opinion though it tries to resist the latest trends in thinking.

The trend of religion is certainly going out of fashion in the west- people are realising that religion was created by those in power in order to retain their power and keep the proletariat obedient and ignorant.

Now in much of the world people are simply too intelligent to be taken in by the simplistic promises and threats proliferated by religions.

I'm all for having morals, but really what is the reasoning behind worshipping an invisible entity on a daily basis? what do people get from it, other than repression?

Unfortunately, when you equate religion to clothing--ie, using the words 'trend' and 'fashion, your argument cannot stand on it's own.
You might get a better grasp if you knew what exactly defines "religion". It is a common belief, and quite frankly, nobody can convince ME that leggings and 80's clothes are back in style, so that, my dear Pooh, must make me an atheist in your book, if your argument is to make any sense at all. Which it doesn't. Trend and Fashion are not beliefs that one lives by. If they are, then you got bigger problems than what reflects in the mirror.

IF that was true then the trend of Christianity has been around over 2000 years. It would be the only trend to last that long.

Religions are not a trend. it's a commitment and style of life. You can't say that American type of life is a trend (just for an example) it's the way how people live and express themselves.

Yeah, and your question makes it quite apparent as to how you too have been brainwashed. It's fashionable, isn't it, to preach against faith or religion of any kind, just as you are doing. This is, in fact , your own religion. Whatever you believe in, it's your religion, so really you're no different to the rest of us.

Sure, Christianity could be a trend...if trends last hundreds of thousands of years. And clearly your idea of a 'trend' is fuzzy since trends DO in fact go out of style.
