Walking is the best overall excercise for everybody regardless of current fitness (assuming you have legs).

Next would be cycling. Then climbing up hills, and finally jogging.

If you are starting exercise I would approach it in that order.

Weights help you build strength in certain specific muscles. For example if you need to build up strength in your thighs, you might use that machine a lot. You could also try climbing up hills.

If you are wheelchair bound and need to build upper body strength then get a couple of bricks, and use them as weights to develop your different upper body muscles. When you use free weights be careful not to use weights for which you find it difficult to lift. Choose a light brick, and have many repetitions of the excercise as opposed to a heavy brick and a few repetitions.

Swimming and cycling generally best, walking also good, but then so is looking after young children 24/7, it all depends on your situation and needs.

I'd say cycling is probably the most practical, as it also takes you somewhere.

Point is, whatever you do, last thing you need is a gym and weights! I'd avoid running, but walking is a cheap form of exercise (it also takes you somewhere, it just takes longer).

You could try:

Walking, running, cycling and maybe swimming if you have access to a pool - which you may not by the sounds of it.

You could also try sit ups and press ups in you house, plus a whole multitude of simliar exercises.

Firstly there's the great outdoors, but you have to be prepared for potentially being spotted huffing and puffing by people you know!!

For me, I tend to go for exercise DVDs. There's loads of great ones out there now and you can go for aerobic or toning or a combination, depending on what you want.

Swimming, if you can get to a pool. Otherwise cycling, if you have access to some pleasant countryside. Or gardening, which has the advantage that you get something back in return for your aches and pains.
