Complicated question with some posssible simple answers:
1. Asians you come across are not typical examples. The parents are getting away from Asia for a better life. They tend to be the more gifted.
2. The sacrifice from the parents have a motivating effect.
3. Many Asian cultures value education
Why are they not as developed?
1. Colonised and plundered for many years.
2. Nations develop and go through various stages of value adds.
3. Refer to rise and fall of nations.
4. What you know today is fast changing - the US is in decline. One big reason is they now consume more than they save. US is at the top for quite some time. At the top there is only one other direction.
5. Pure speculation but you have asked a difficult question. Refer to some of the speeches by Benake. Read Forbes, Reuters and other well informed sources. There is a very thought provoking article in the latest issue of the Far Eastern Economic Review. I hope I am not casting pearls before swines.

This I would say is a stereotype that asians always do better.

For an explination though, I would say that the ones who do come to western countries, come from more afluent families and can afford the opportunity. Most people with money have had a chance to be educated so you see the learning is passed down. Traditionally you don't see a lot of poor farmers from the rice fields in China with a lot of information about technology. Expereince and immersion are important. You build off your surroundings and what you see. I also believe the reason for the lesser development is due to goverment restrictions. For example Japan is very technological advanced. Mongolia is not as far advanced. Its also an economic issue in these contries.

They have more respect for their parents and the parents emphasize education more.....but that's why Asians tend to be boring and not very willing to talk in class, generally speaking. Which Asian country are you talking about not developed? Japan is more developd than just about any country in the world. I dont know the distinction from developed to developing countries, but I know Canada is a developed country and South Korea is a developing country, but I dont see any difference...South Korea has better infrastructure than Canada and is second to Canada in GDP....It is hard to develop a country with old ways and traditions. It is always much easier to start fresh from scratch like we did in North America 100-200 years ago. California is the 6th largest economy in the world and most of it has been built in the last 50 years. China is 5000 years old, and not really a unified country, even to this day...........extremely hot coutries like Indonesia, Philippines and others were hard to develop, and have had terrible corrupt governments for years....what ever happened to the billions given to the Tsuanami victims?,,,we never hear about that anymore.

hmmm good question .I wonder if it has more to do with society and culture .More distractions for kids in western countries.TV ..lifestyle suggested by watching television ?perhaps .not much of extra curricular activites as western students have. Most kids in western countries have more freedom when finishing school to hang out with friends etc while asian countries they usually go home to help around the house so I guess even studying might be a welcomed peaceful moment . They also see some of the same shows we watch here so to them education equals success and can bring the same luxuries that they believe everyone has here..

Only my thoughts on it

asian students are more diligent to study than western students bacause of the hope of developing their country just like the western countries. in this light, western students do not do well in their studies because they believe that they don't need to study hard since their country is already developed.

they do better because they are more prepared to sweat it out.. most asians are brought up with the principle that to gain something you have to work hard for it... the reason why most asian nations is not fully developed even if almost all of its people are prepared to labor hard for his nation's prosperity, is because of the lack of opportunity brought about by investments and technologies.. most asian countries are rich with natural resources which are now being wasted because they do not have the know-how on how to fully utilize these resources for the improvement of their country's economy.

I agree with most answerers above. Asia and Middle Eastern cultures put education as priority. Only those who can not afford to educate their kids.
As for why not developed? It is a good question, but development needs resources ( money and peace ) and a country with one source can not do without the other.
