Those who have not fairly analyzed their selves tend to get a bit cocky about things that they have no right to be cocky about. I remember when I was little, my mom noticed that I was developing a bit of a superiority complex due to interaction with other boys that were perhaps not as smart as I was at that time. She made a wry comment, that has stuck with me, since I was six or seven. She said, if you slip and fall and hit your head the wrong way, you will lose everything that you pride on, and you may not even be able to control your drool or the muscles of your tongue!! To this day I imagine myself drooling and any sense of arrogance is immediately turned into humility!

Ego is based on misrepresenting things in our own mind. We are nothing but SPERM to WORM!! Regardless of who it is we are talking about. We came from a squiggly entity, and if buried will be eaten with satisfaction by the little guys in the earth.

All other "realities" are really a gift and a blessing of the Allah/God/YHWH/Brahma, for neither did we made the Earth that we walk on, nor the air we breathe, nor the Sun that we depend on, nor the body or brain that we pride in.

Ultimately TRUTH is we are nothing by ourselves, except through the ULTIMATE MERCY of the GRAND LORD ALMIGHTY!!

Once this is clearly understood, there is no place for ego, no place for putting yourself above others and ultimately what you realize is, the one who lowers more in front of the ULTIMATE CREATOR is more risen, as he has finally realized the TRUTH of his own insignificance, except with the support of the Almighty.

I hope this makes sense.

Our Ego is always at work, it is involuntary part of our psyche
The animal instinct in us always keeps us on our guard. This can be against anything. This is ego. A person without ego has no fear in him. He is divine.

Sometimes we may feel smug or superior to someone else and this would be our ego at work. We just need to take a dose of humility to overcome it.
