I have complained to ofcom, (well they banned tom and jerry episodes because they were smoking), but when i complained about the nspcc ads and oxfam ads on skys childrens channels they say that its ok unless it upsets many people. (Mainly boomerang and cartoon network)
My children, aged 5 and 2and a half can't understand why scooby doo is interrupted by the vision of a baby on life support. Me either. Don't get me wrong, my kids don't always have the tv on, but i feel i should be able to leave scooby doo on and go and clean the bathroom, or scrub the kitchen floor, or god forbid, actually get 5 minutes to myself!! I can't though, even though scooby is my sons favourite programme. I feel its unfair to show children this sort of thing as they are powerless to do anything, a more subtle commercial could be alot better - one that would get the msg across to the kids that 'know' and goes straight over the heads of the kids who don't 'know'.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that we should wrap our kids in cotton wool, but when you can't explain whats happening and can't answer "why is that baby like that"? or having to cope with a 2 and a half year old crying at the image of another baby stuck in its cot with no bottle, crying itself, I think its wrong.

I have set an email to the advertising standards agency who originally told me that nothing could be done because it was a charity advert, pointing them to this, so we can use it as a make-shift petition.
I also offered to get one from my daughters school, as I'm sure that the majority of people will be happy to sign it.
Its stupid that the people in power seem to be oblivious!

In answer to indigo, I did used to give nspcc £8 a month by direct debit, long before they started this advertising campaign. If you want to do something like that, its not hard to find out how to do it, especially with the net.
Besides, as I said before, why do the ads have to be so graphic? I'm not against charity adverts, just the nature of these ones are too graphic.

In response to mariolla o, I agree that people need to be aware, but there is no way that I can explain to my 2and a half year old what is going on, I've told my 5 year old about "the naughty people", and said thats why she must be careful with strangers and never keep secrets from me. There is something though that I haven't said yet, my 5 yr old has had some exposure when she was with her biological father and doesn't need reminding about stuff like that.
Its not that we are priviledged, we live on a council estate but I have worked and am setting up in business myself! I think though that targeting children (who are not in a position to actively do anything) is immoral

That's how marketing and spin doctors work: making sure there is an impact when expose to their messages. Yes I agree with you that is upsetting for us and what is worst marketing people do not realise next generations will be immune to others' sufferers.

Totally agree with you there! It's horrible that these ads come on kids' TV. If there's a petition to be signed, my name'll be on it. Other than that, the only thing I did to combat it was get Sky+. I realise this may or may not be an option for you, maybe you could try a scooby bumper video or DVD. You can even rent them from your local library for something like £1 a week. Hope this helps.

I don't like shock tactic TV it isn't necessary we can all imagine what happens to some children without be shown in graphic detail, I work with children and it is depressing and unhelpful it may make a few guilty people to put their fat hand in their pocket, but if the masses wanted to give they would without any advertisement.
Plus what effect is it having on the child actors playing these roles, you only have to look at Drew Barrymore in Poltergeist to see that playing horrific roles does to you she ended up a druggy alcoholic at 13 years old.

People do need to be aware of some of the shocking things, that happen to SOME children behind closed doors, but totally agree with you , they should choose the timings a bit better, as little ones don't understand

I agree.
Their hoping kids will run to mom or dad and pester them to donate, like they would pester them to buy a toy they saw on an advert.
It's not right. Charity adverts should be aired on more adult channels, as this is the market they are aiming at.
Maybe start a petition and send it to ofcom. They cant ignore you forever, esp if there are a lot of you.

I agree with you. I dont believe that ads like that should be broadcast on childrens channels. Like a ten year old can pick up the phone and set up a direct debit from their current account! Sorry for being flipant, but those ads should just be on adult orientated channels.

Yes, just to make you feel guilty, I bet you ten Pt's that the directors of those charities are driving the latest sports cars.
I thought the ethos of those channels was supposed to be clean, innocent entertainment, not people maimed by bombs and babies on life support. I think its absolutely ridiculous, if its complaints they want, its complaints they shall get.
My nephew and niece are the same age, I agree with everything you are saying!

there is nothing worse than sitting down to watch a little tv and those commercials for Christian Childrens' Fund coming on and showing a little girl playing in the gutter. I know for a fact that all the money received by those charities don't make it to the children for whom its for. I refuse to donate to them, and i agree that they need to make their commercials a little less graphic or at least not advertise on shows that children watch.

I have to agree with you. My son in 9 and it does upset him. Not only that one, but all the other nspcc adverts. I agree that this abuse to children has to be stamped out, but the adverts shouldn't be shown on the children's channels.

Yeah i agree and dont you just hate those bloody loan adds aswell, you just go to get the little ones a sandwich, next thing
they are singing along with a loan ad, and think it will solve all your problems to be deeper in debt, and dont forget the home owner loans try telling your kids they are homeless because
you could'nt pay it back !!. Screw the adds they should put them in newspapers so we can read them and bin them.
