I dont know where to put this question, but here it is. I was interested in obtaining a concealed weapon permit, So i can carry my pistol around for self defence Anyways, a long time ago I was going thru some teenage BS and got myself sent to a mental hospital on 2 occasions, for 10 and 14 days respectively. I was diagnosed with depression. This was when I was 14ish, I am now older and I feel that I am no longer in the same predicament i was in... What I want to know is will that haunt me for the rest of my life, Or will I be able to buy a handgun and get it legal to carry permit? it is very worrying for me, as this is the only black spot on my record. It was a LONG time ago but i am still afraid it will negatively affect my life. Please try to provide a link to your answer. I dont know if i need to state anything else, just ask if i do

"ATF regulations (see 27 CFR 178.11) define "committed to a mental institution" to mean:

A formal commitment of a person to a mental institution by a court, board, commission, or other lawful authority. The term includes a commitment to a mental institution involuntarily. The term includes a commitment for mental defectiveness or mental illness. It also includes commitments for other reasons, such as drug use. The term does not include a person in a mental institution for observation or a voluntary admission to a mental institution."

I'd recommend you see a mental specialist soon and get a good bill of health. Any time you purchase a firearm, you will be asked that on the required ATF forms. You will be required to disclose it, because if you don't, and they find out, you will be charged with lying on a federal document.

Here in NJ, to purchase firearms at all, you need a Firearms ID Card, from your local police department. That takes a while to process, mainly because the police drag their feet. Once you get that, you may purchase rifles and shotguns, but not pistols. For pistols, you need a Handgun Purchase Permit, one for each pistol you plan to buy. No limit to the number of permits you can apply for.

Don't bother with the carry permit--NJ only issues them to armed security, and those demonstrating a "compelling need," which is very arbitrary and can be refused by either the Chief of Police or the issuing Judge.

You can get a non resident carry permit in other states. Check out www.anjrpc.com and www.njcsd.com.
