I have never believed in a higher being even from when I was a child. It just didnt make sense to me then and today it still doesn't that such a higher power could exist. I have studied the earth, its beginings, its formations, and its changes and from what I have learned and know, there is no god what-so-ever. I believe that the vast majority of the stories in the bible are taken from ancient myths and placed into a book that was written by men as a means to control. There is for me, not a single strand on my hair that believes a single word in the book was written by god. I understand from years of studies also the fragile mind of men back during these times and before where instances such as earthquakes, tsunamis and liquifraction and basic geological processes (which describe quite a vast amount of the outcomes of the stories in the bible) were classed as an act of god. They did not know better then, however I find it difficult to understand why so many people fail to question the validity of the religion and instead take it at face value.

As children we have to take things "on faith" that our parents and teachers tell us. Then as we get older, we realize we can make some determinations for ourselves, like actually counting how many eggs are in a carton, etc. Then, with the advent of reason, we can know even more, tho often what we realize is that we don't or can't know a thing. This leads to the realization that no one has ever been to Heaven and returned, that I've met anyway and who can prove it, and furthermore, all the people I've ever seen die appear to stay dead. So I don't know about God, and frankly I don't know how anyone else could either. We have all been told by others - that is the basis for our beliefs - but simple reason shows us that they only believe because they in turn were told by THEIR others, and so on, and that really, it is against all logic and evidence. That said, let's start with examining Nature, which appears to do a lot of building and activity without our help - it seems to have some motive force inherent in it - not that we understand that either - but at least we can see that and agree that it is evident. Perhaps we'll know more in the future.

I believe the most beautiful, amazing, breathtaking answers to questions such as how the universe came to be, etc, are the ones that science is in the process of giving us. I believe everything is composed of just a handful of elements and that a slight shift- a little more of this, a little less of that- is what creates differences. I believe nothing is nore amazing than raw nature- no mysticality needed. I believe that when I die my molecules go back into the earth and my energy lives on through feeding scavengers, insects, the soil. I believe in What Is.

Might makes right. I'm meek, so I generally stay out of the way and watch the changing of the guard with a sneer. That's how things work anyways. As far as the meaning of life, we're just tiny dust particles in a great universe. As a group, we may serve some purpose, but God or some supreme being did not model us after his image or care any more for us than a common coachroach. Western and Middle-Eastern religions are bunch of fairly tale stories to make people feel important and justify him killing his less enlighten brothers and sisters.

I do not believe that any religion has The Answers. I do not believe that science has The Answers either. I do, however, believe that science has a much better shot at reaching... well, maybe not The Answers, but something useful. Better Questions, maybe. :)

Science has one thing going for it that no religion has; it admits to its own fallibility. Sure, there are hidebound profs and researchers wearing blinders... that's human nature. But the scientific method is a process of questioning, questioning, questioning, whereas religion is composed of acceptance of 'revealed truth'. A good scientist tries to understand how and why things happen, whereas a good theologian tries to rationalize discrepancies between his religion and observable phenomena or events.

So, I wouldn't characterize myself as a 'believer', but if I had to put my money on either Religion or Science, I know where I'll place my bet.

How is it possible that there is an all powerful entity that resides in the skies above us. In every religion, god, is an all powerful and loving creator, yet, somehow, we, humans have been given a gift of free will and this life that we lead. Then, books written thousands of years ago are supposed to lead us to god, but wait, hundreds of books are not included in the final draft and the debate evolves as does the term faith. All religions tend to claim that they have the right path to god, and that all others are wrong. No sign of god yet. Religions are responsible for millions of deaths, still no sign of god. There is poverty, birth defects, rapes, war and still no sign of god, but all will say that there is a plan! Are you kidding me? Others say that the earth was "created in six days", but will back it up with how do you know how long a day to god is? This world is beyond faith, we are at a point in civilization that we need to unequivocally see proof.

I don't believe in anything. Every single religion has some form of contradiction, or fails with current knowledge of how the world works (including age of the world, power of prayers, near death experience, etc). Since God hasn't spoken to me directly, I can't make up a religion. And a deist God doesn't need to exist, so overall there isn't any reason to believe.

Me? Belief is based purely on evidence.

For instance, there is a lack of evidence of God (read: No evidence for God) so I lack belief in God.

That gives me the highest chance of having an accurate interpretation of the world, which I can put to use to help to solve the world!

I am also learning about people here. That is part of the accuracy thing.

Good question.

I don't believe in the God each religion advertises. I can make my own observations, know what's right and wrong without the threat of eternal fire hanging over my head.
I believe that humans could live in harmony or at least make it better if they allowed themselves to open their minds and not be limited by other people's mythical figures.

I am an unbeliever because I definitely don't/won't trust any kind of religious & spiritual beliefs.

"Unbeliever" is the best label I have found so far.
= "who doesn't believe in religions & spiritualities". Simple.

I don't/won't belong to any kind of movement. I am not involved in a quest.

---

I do believe in Life and in Humanness.
