I'm starting life at UCSB in two weeks and I would like to get into some kind of serious relationship while I'm there but I've heard that people don't like to get into close relationships (romantic or friendship). Is this true?

Are you staying at "the towers"?

I went there for a year...sure you can find a nice stable relationship...
but...
why?

A) You're not going there to find the perfect partner -
B) the ratio of straight single men to women is 18 to 1 -

- have a great year

That's true for a lot of college students. My girlfriend and I had agreed that when she left for Davis we'd break up.

It's difficult to be committed to somebody when school and work are so high up on your priority list. Plus, people in college don't always know where they're going when they finish, most think about going back home. If they get in a serious relationship, then they may have to end it.

Not to mention all of the breaks in between semesters...long distance relationships take their toll on people, no matter how long or short the duration is.

But, don't let that get you down. Just because every single person isn't looking for something serious doesn't mean they wont end up in something serious under the right circumstances.

I am sure that is the case with a lot of colleges in the US. Not just UC Santa Barbara. Mainly it has to do with the fact that many are away from home for the first time and want to enjoy their newly acquired independence by not being tied down. Another reason is that many are focused on their studies and don't want the distraction of a potential relationship.
