The Force is not the same as The Ill Wind; they may both be powerful, but only one will conquer the Empire. As for 'bona fide', I believe Al, er, The Reverend has a point. It's Wikipedia that's an institution, not The Smell That Brought Wynyard To it's Knees.

This is a very difficult legal area. In essence, if the judge likes you, you have a bona fide religion, so says the court. If the judge doesn't like you, you don't have a bona fide religion, so says the court. Yes, it's totally arbitrary and one-sided.

I would like to attempt to answer your question, to contribute to the debate in the hope that I will not offend any of the teachers of any tradition with my own lack of understanding, because that is where the best answers to a question like this will be found.

When you say "bona-fide" it implies an authority; something to in a way qualify it as bona fide, to judge or determine whether a religion is or is not bona fide. I will examine three aspects of this question: the external point of view, the internal point of view and the perception by logical deduction. The two points of view (internal and external) could be termed the objective and the subjective, but I think that these terms are not appropriate in this context since in a sense they both are objective in the sense that they deal with objectifying what is an internal process. That is the process of validating (determining the bona fides) spiritual perception.
From an external point of view, from the point of view of someone outside of the religion in question, whether a religion is bona fide is of course a matter of opinion since there are different answers. For some it will be a teacher, for others it will be a scripture, for yet others this will be a tradition of verifiable transmission. For a number of people the answer to what is bona fide is a combination of some or all of these factors. There may be other factors, but I can't think of any that would not eventually reduce to one of these three.
From an internal point of view, from the point of view of someone practising the religion in question, whether a religion is bona fide is a matter of certainty, or if you will "faith" which is a belief in things that are not directly perceived. The reason that it is faith is because in order to truly recognise any or all of the three factors that have been listed requires realisation. The realisation can be based on good fortune and/or on the fruition of past enquiries, but on first encounter, there is no way to verify that a religion is bona fide, so it remains a matter of faith.
The aspect of determining the bona fides of a religion by logical deduction requires that if one accepts the validity of the concept of bona fide religion, then by logical implication one must accept the concept in "non bona fide" religion. This is where it becomes very difficult because we are for the most part incapable, in the sense of unqualified, to make this determination. The closest we can come to this to judge the fruit, that is make a determination by deduction from what we are given to consider. We know that a tomato seed will give a tomato plant and that eventually the fruit is a tomato. The symptoms of being a tomato are acidity, juiciness, a certain acidity. If a fruit exhibits these and other symptoms, we can be relatively certain of it "quality." It is the same way for anything that comes to fruition. In the spiritual realm, we could say that the fruit is self realisation. Among the symptoms of self realisation are compassion, wisdom, an ability to skilfully encounter the conditions of existence and a state of psychological balance and solidity of appreciating things as they are. These are the factors that we as people in an unrealised and untrained state can rely on to come to an appreciation of the various "quality" of a particular religious expression.
I realise that my answer is not an answer at all, but an inadequate description of the concept of bona fide. I hope that there are not too many errors, and that it is a positive contribution to this debate.

Yo Bro/Sis
I dunno how ya message came to me but it got me thinkin. Religion is somethin that must be comin from G-O-D. Must be some type of information, in words or in writing. Like bible and others. Problem is you aint never gonna understand it on your own, so you go see some type of priest/teacher/guide/guru. I think this is where it all goes wrong in all religions. You get the fat bearded guys, the gospellin guys, the shaved head guys, the morons, the witnesses, all want to make you believe they know best. Like Jesus is the ONLY way, Allah is the ONLY way. There is only ONE way. It's like they've been reading from 'Learn How To Drive'. I say F**** those who talk like this. I think those guys who talk like this ARE the evil. In a nutshell I don't know what is a bona-fide religion. I just know what is not. Like in legal term, bona-fide is legal religion and you also have illegal religion. Most are. But as my granma says where there is shadow there is sun.

Bona fide =Good faith, or in Latin bona fides, is the mental and moral state of honesty, conviction as to the truth or falsehood of a proposition or body of opinion, or as to the rectitude or depravity of a line of conduct, even if the conviction is objectively unfounded.

Religion is a system of social coherence based on a common group of beliefs or attitudes concerning an object, person, unseen being, or system of thought considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine or highest truth, and the moral codes, practices, values, institutions, and rituals associated with such belief or system of thought. It is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system"[1], but is more socially defined than that of personal convictions.

Any thing that you make important in you life to the point of worship. Just about anything can be a religion. Some people worship God, others worship money, others worship self, etc.
