It is Aberdeen. There is a hilarious description of this God awful city in a book called 'A big boy did in and ran away' by Chrisopher Brookmyre who is a darkly funny Scottish writer of crime/action fiction. It made me nearly fall off the bed laughing when I first read it!

Aberdeen in Scotland is known as the "Granite City". (A few years back it was known as the "Gateway to the Afterlife", after an outbreak of some disease! Possibly salmonella poisoning from Scottish food!)

If you are referring to The British Isles then it is Aberdeen, Scotland. It's know as that because granite was used for many of its buildings.
