If you feel that you drink too much, these steps may help you.
1 Do not buy groceries and alcohol at the same time
2 Pick a day on which to drink (this means don't have a beer or a shot or get buzzed in between). If it helps, privately write down how you felt all week until your first drink
3 On your designated day, before you drink, or get ready to go out. (You might have to really conciously put effort towards this) - Read/Remember How you felt all week highs and lows.
4 Avoid drinkers. Plain and simple, stay out of bars. Don't buy cigarettes at booze stores, don't pull alcohol for your friends or family.
5 t's impossible in life to avoid places that involve alcohol, however for this soft and sore time in your life never put yourself in situations and if you find yourself in them, then find your way out. Mainly the same door you came in.
6 Do WHATEVER you have to, But DO NOT have that first drink. IF this means AA meatings, Religion, A pot a coffee, 10 packs of smokes a day, Outpatient Programs, counciling. Then DO IT, These things become the weapons in the fight for YOUR life.
7 Why alcohol is taking your life is a question that will only be answered, When you DON'T let it take your life. It's like some kind of non-living evil dictator demon liquid that can only live and breath and act in the world through you.
8 Tell the truth, If someone sees that you're behaviour has changed regarding drinking. Just say it, I quit drinking or i'm slowing down... That truth will eventually disarm the pressure that people, places, and events have on you to drink.
9 Everything you've just read here took maybe 10-15 mins of your time
10 Don't cut way down right away, or you may go on a drinking binge.
11 if you are a very very heavy drinker, quitting 'cold turkey' can cause life threatening medical problems.

I quit it first when my kids were little, and I needed to be sober to take proper care of them. After they were grown and gone, I took it up again. Then I had an accident, and am now disabled, take too much medication to use alcohol, too. (The accident had nothing to do with alcohol. I fell down a flight of stairs). It's a matter of necessity.

I'm going to answer seriously because it can be serious. If you have the shakes if you don't drink or you have blood pressure problems - you need to be admitted for medical withdrawal. If you just tend to be extremely social, you just have to make up your mind and quit drinking. I didn't like AA but a lot of people do. I did go to rehab for 4 days because of my blood pressure and it was pretty cool. Fed me, sent me to classes, etc.
But the main thing was to not drink when I got home.
My husband still has a beer or two, I don't avoid drinking situations, I just don't drink. It's not always easy but it is definitely worth the effort.
Easier than dieting, or stopping smoking or taking up exercising. It's been 5 months for me and maybe someday I'll have a glass of wine with dinner, but maybe not.

If you are drinking at regular time, simply do something at that time - be with people. Dont stay near places where you can buy alcohol. Develop alternate hobbies.

Just think of the negatives. Alcohol is for people who are empty inside.

Is your life unmanageble because of it? Any losses of jobs, relationships, self-esteem, houses, boats, cars, or runs in with the law? Think about these questions. If Yes, to one of these, then you need to go to a treatment center for 30 days or more. Good luck to you, been there done that - sober for years.....Kitty

First thing you have to do is WANT to. AND is has to be for the right reason. If your reason isn't sufficient to keep you motivated, you wont be able to maintain sobirety.
Next you have to discover whether you can do it alone, or if you need help. Not everyone needs help, but that is a decison that requires a person to be brutally honest with themselves about their abilities, their motivations, and their goals.
Finally, and most important, once you have determined the right wat to go about it, you have to stick with it.
