There are chemicals in milk and poultry that actually help you get to sleep (trytophans). That's one reason why people just want to sit around after Thanksgiving dinner--because the turkey relaxes you.
There are other things you can do to help yourself get ready for sleep--take a walk in the afternoon, take a warm bath, have dim light, set up a pattern of things to do to get ready for bed and keep to it. Drink chamomile tea.
But if you're sitting there awake right now the best thing for you to do is turn off the computer, drink a glass of milk, then go to bed and read a fiction book--that breaks the cycle of you thinking about your life and sets your thoughts on somewhere else.

Personally I think the best answer I read is the one before mine. I myself have sleep problems, but have a diagnosed medical problem. Okay here is what was suggested to me, by a sleep neurologist. First off establish a bedtime, if it's 10:00 p.m. then it needs to be 10:00 p.m. everynight. Second off keep your room btwn 68-70 degree F. Third turn off all lights, this includes your computer screen and television. Fourth stop eating an hour to two hours before bed, sometimes we can have reflux once we lay down. And so we continue...
Don't read before you go to sleep, or don't read to go to sleep. If you have been staying up late all summer part of the problem is establishing a routine again. You need to only use your bed for sleeping, not for talking on your computer (yes I am a bad example) or the phone or even doing homework. Do not take daytime naps. If you find that you are still not sleeping then after 20 minutes get up and walk to another room. Do this every twenty-40 minutes, until you become tired. By doing this you are retraining your body to associate your bedroom with sleep and not whatever else you do it. Maybe mediatation helps, I don't know I have never tried it. I know you said that you did not want to take anything, but if all of this fails after a week or so. There is an over the counter vitamin/mineral that your brain naturally should have called Serotinin. Serotonin is none addictive, and some of us don't have enough of it in our brains. This particular chemical helps to control out rhythmic cycle of when we sleep and when we don't. Start by taking one milligram for about two weeks, if you still don't find that you are sleep, you can increase this to two-three milligrams. Once you find that your cicadin rhythms for sleep are back in order you can stop taking this.
But if all fails, go to the doctors and have a sleep study done, maybe there is a medical reason why you are not sleeping. There are many things that can cause you not to be able to sleep. Ranging from insomnia, restless leg syndrome, to sleep apneia, so try everything and don't get up. Best of Luck to you!

Try to have your room temp between 70 and 76 degrees. Turn off all lights, and turn any clocks away from you. You can have a soft night light in a hall so if you have to get up you do NOT turn on any bright lights. This will further awaken you. Lay comfortably (on your back, side, tummy, whatever you normally do) and clear your mind. I know this is hard, but try to without dwelling on trying to clear your mind :) then relax. Breathe through your nose, making your abdomen rise, not your chest. This is deep, relaxed breathing. If you haven't ever breathed this way it may take a few minutes to get used to it. Try to breathe in slow EVEN breaths. Breathe in and count until you need to breathe out, then breathe out to the same count. As you get used to this and if you are still not asleep. Concentrate on relaxing your body starting with your toes, feet, ankles, calves, knees, thighs, etc... Really try not to look at the time, it will only stress your body further. I hope this helps. Have you ever tried to meditate or self hypnosis? The easiest way I can explain it is: Talk to your body piece by piece in your mind,.say..."ten toes that are really tired, feel how tired they are and then say goodnight toes, feet, legs, and such. Each time you say goodnight to a piece, don't move it again. Usally by the time I get to my mouth, or ears I am out. Try it, it works for me.

I either watch one of the late night talk shows, or read a book. Both are equally boring, most of the time, so you will go to sleep to get away from them. lol

i suggest reading a book . hubby says meditation. he has a sleep disorder and that is what he does to go to sleep. night night. sweet dreams
